Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage, seemed an interesting combination at first sight, but as it turned out a good one as well.

The plot is that a honorary military officer is pissed at the government not properly compensating the families of the Vietnam war, so he takes control of the abandoned prison island Alcatraz, steals some poison gas missiles and threatens to fire them at San Francisco, unless the families are properly compensated. Connery plays John Mason a former British SAS spy, who is imprisoned for withholding information, he is recruited, as he is the only man known to have escaped from Alcatraz. Cage plays Dr Stanley Goodspeed an FBI agent highly skilled in biochemistry and toxicology, he's recruited for his knowledge on chemicals, these two together with a crack team of seals are sent to break Alcatraz and diffuse the bombs.

The plot is brilliant with a number of interesting twists along the way. Camera shots and angles at times are amazing, with stunts and special effects not outstanding but believable. The script and dialogue is both funny and interesting, and well written.

Performances are probably the best thing about this film, Connery is well believable and convincing as the mysterious John Mason, while Cage is astounding as the geeky but at the same time cool, Goodspeed. Ed Harris is strong as the pissed military officer, which makes an all round well balanced cast.

The ending is perhaps a little bit of a let down, but not totally devastating, so if you like great Action/Suspence movies then this is a film for you.

The Rock DVD - review by the_grouch

Advantages: A thoroughly well-executed “Boy’s Own” movie with plenty of action....
Disadvantages: Ultimately very silly, a little derivative and of course, the logic is occasionally flawed....
