Drama - Director: Steve Shill, David Nutter, Danny Leiner, Tim Van Patten, Alan Taylor, Steve Buscemi, Jack Bender - Original Language: English - Classification: 18 years and over
Advantages: Lavish sets and gorgeous costume, great cast, the lascivious undertones and the whole damn campy lot of the rest of it! Disadvantages: Dated and cheesy, jumbled themes, muted action scenes, product constrained by its times
...) and Michael Rennie as Peter so you can see the strength in depth the cast has. Fox certainly spared no expense with this production and despite my never having heard of it aside from the trailer at the begining of The Robe on DVD, it appears it raked in the big bucks at the time and it's fair to say, still looks good today.
Does it still cut the mustard? Yes and no. It certainly lives up to its promise as being a gladiator movie seeing as much of it takes place 'behind the scenes' of the arena as it were as opposed to just showing the battles themselves but the action does feel muted. You can't fault the cast and the production(as a time piece), nor will you fail to be entertained by the campy nature of the censor-dodging innuendo, leering and drooling from some of the more depraved characters. However, in terms of the central religious themes...

Advantages: Good to capture the Amen live atmosphere Disadvantages: Cheesy effects, Nothing will compare to amen live
...the robe, is called under the rope on this DVD.
Personally, id much rather see a raw production of a concert, in which no cheesy effects eclipse the real performances. However, this DVD is still a good buy....

--- Special Features ---
Using limited to describe the special features would be an understatement. They consist of a theatrical trailer from the movie, as well as trailers for other historic epics of the time (Cleopatra, The Robe, and Demetrius and the Gladiators). To be fair though the trailers are quite interesting especially
--- Cost and Availability ---
This DVD has an RRP of £12.99, and when I checked everywhere seemed to be sticking to this value. The major stores such as HMV and Virgin both stuck to the RRP as did Amazon.
--- Overall Thoughts ---
A person's response to this film is dependant almost entirely on whether they like historical epics. I...

Advantages: Excellent movie, the best I've seen in a long time. Disadvantages: I only wish they had kept in all the deleted scenes, and then added more. I couldn't get enough.
...If you have seen Ben Hur, Sparticus, The Robe, or Anthony and Cleopatra and thought that these weak portrayals of the Roman Era were good then you will love Gladiator. If you didn’t find any of the other films about this era very exciting or like I did very weak, then you will still love Gladiator.
Russell Crowe plays the part of a Roman General sentenced to death, escapes, reduced to slavery and forced to fight as a gladiator. From this lowly position he wins the admiration of the citizens of Rome and brings about the downfall of the Emperor.
Gladiator is a brilliant movie and one that you will want to see time and again. It is an enthralling plot that is not in any way distracted from by sub-plots, like many of the movies which have gone before had a tendency to do. Ridley Scott’s direction is masterful and the movie sticks...

...hanging by a thread of humanity, will it survive or will it cease, leaving only infected human like creatures that will eventually die?
A delightful tale and lot's of things to make you think about along the way. Obviously the cold war was around at the time and directors and writers were in there element. The acting by Charlton Heston and Anthony Zerbe, are very good and help you to believe in the story itself.
There are places in the film that are not very convincing. Such as the fact that the 'family' wear hooded robes and have extremely white skin wearing mirrored sunglasses. I feel this is a little over the top on the part of the costume department, and reminds me a little of the Ku Klux Clan wearing Black robes instead of the infamous White robes !!!!.
On the whole the story is believable and the idea of possibly being the only healthy...
