If you have seen his other films then this is a little different, not his usual mad or fighting self, but much more tame on that scene.

For those of you that dont know I am mad on Mel Gibson. Call me nuts if you like but I think he is drop dead gorgeous. After watching this film on the television on Saturday prompted me to write this review. I do own the film and also every one of his others.
If you have seen his other films then this is a little different, not his usual mad or fighting self, but much more tame on that scene.
This is one thing that I like about this film, it comes under the heading of Drama, and really is a film that you can sit down on a sunday afternoon with the family and watch. It makes a great change to watch a film with no violence, drugs or sex involved, such a rare event these days and makes a delightful change.

Set in the Midwest Usa, tells the story of Tom Garvey (Mel Gibson), Mae Garvey (Sissy Spacek) and there two children. The story tells of the struggles and strifes of a young farming family. They have a bad harvest, a river which overflows and a businessman played by Scott Glen who tries to bring in some sort of modernisation in by building a dam that will only make the flooding a lot worse. Tom is a very proud man who will not accept any help from anyone, and finds it hard to cope, especially with the farm financially, and takes on the job as a scab labourer at the local foundary whilst the men that are already there are on strike. This leaves Mae and the children to run the farm whilst he is away. It shows strength courage and determination of the family to manage while he is away. When he returns to the farm the struggles still go on with yet another raging and overflowing river, and a businessman still trying to get other local farmers to sell up so that the damm can be built. But what is left of the local village inhabitants they manage to stick together, to beat the opposition, beat the river and to keep hold of the communities determination to fight this battle and keep there homes and livelihood.
*** Verdict ***
Some of my thoughts are made earlier on but it really is worth watching for the family entertainment side of things, without the usual activities that we see on our television sets today. It is not slushy but good to see a happy ending.
Spissy Spacek's acting is brilliant and that so of the two children, and she was actually nominated for Best Actress for this film. Also the Director Mark Rydell was nominated as Best Director.
The film lasts for approx 119 minutes, is available on Video and DVD. The DVD is available at Amazon from £10.70
Advantages: : A war film that isn't a war film!! Disadvantages: None
BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI
1957
DIRECTED BY DAVID LEAN
A REVIEW ON THE 2000 COLUMBIA TRISTAR DVD VERSION
INTRODUCTION
I feel as I start to review this film, that I should get on my knees, bow rapidly with my arms outstretched in front of me, while shouting "We are not worthy"!!
What rights have I, a retired, (rapidly) aging grandmother, to review one of the greatest films of all time?
I will allow myself the privilege of doing so under the excuse of adding it to the reviews of all the other films from Sir David Lean that I have written recently.
I have to make a large confession here, I used to hate the film!! The reason being that I 'didn't do war films'. I think it was probably the thought of the film I didn't like rather than the film itself, as a teenager in the 1960's ...
Advantages: Great Cast, Fabulous screenplay Disadvantages: A little too long
the closing frames.
I suppose comparisons are inevitable and when trying to distil the various characteristics of Mystic River, you?d have to consider elements of classic, updated gangster flicks like ?Goodfellas?, the cinematography of ?Road to Perdition? and a thoughtful helping of the legendary Sam Mendes. If you enjoy thrillers full of fraught tension acted out with panache and guile then this will be a movie you will relish. For me, this was the best movie of 2003.

Advantages: An acting masterclass by the cream of the crop Disadvantages: Some ends left untied but this is also part of the fantastic unnerving feeling the film generates throughout.
Well?I?m only a year behind. Just as Clint Eastwood is placing his latest directorial offering at the altar of the award-giving gods, I have just got round to watching Mystic River his 2003 film that swept the board in the acting categories at last years Oscars and quite rightly to. This is one of the best recent films I have seen. As Eastwood himself comments in the DVD special feature documentary, Mystic River is not about special effects or an action-packed plot ? it?s about people, human interaction and tremendous acting.
Based on Neil Lehane?s novel, Mystic River is the story of three childhood friends Jimmy Markum, Dave Boyle and Sean Devine living in a fairly bleak Boston neighbourhood. The film starts with the boys as children larking about in the street. Jimmy is the most daring and talks the other two boys into signing ...
