The Ring

Cert. 15
Running time. 115 minutes
Genre. horror/thriller
Cast. Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Daveigh Chase, Brian Cox, Shannon Cochran, Amber Tamblyn, Rachael Bella
Director. Gore Verbinski
Distributer. UIP

The opening sequences of this film emit false illusions into what the film could be like. Very 'Screamesque' like in appearance two teenage girls, Katie (Amber Tamblyn) and Becca (Rachael Bella) are in Katie's bedroom trying to scare one another by telling ghost stories.

Becca: 'Have you heard the story about this weird videotape that kills you when you watch it, it looks like someones nightmare, after you watch it, your phone rings, you pick it up and the voice on the other line says you will die in 7 days'

The look on Katie's face not only tells us she's heard about it but she's seen it too.

The phone ringing downstairs interrupts the moment and terrified Katie answers the phone only for it to be her mother. But upon her chilling steps back upstairs the appearance of puddles on the floor spells danger, sure enough Katie opens the door to her bedroom and also to her demise, a demise we do not witness.

Katie's auntie is Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), an investigative newspaper reporter who has a son Aidan (David Dorfman). The relationship between mother and son is dysfunctional - Aidan even calls her Rachel, this is due to Rachel's dedication to her job and the lack of a father figure. The pair attend the funeral of Katie and Rachel tries to comfort her distraught sister Ruth.

Ruth 'I spent four hours on the internet and I couldn't find one single case of a 16 yr old girls heart just stopping, I spoke to three different doctors and not one of them could tell me exactly what happened to my daughter'

A fleeting glimpse of Katie's horrified face as she lies dead slumped in her bedroom sent a shiver up my spine and will yours!

Ruth asks her reporter sister for help in getting to the bottom of it and Rachel reluctantly agrees.

Rachel hears Katie's freinds talking about how Katie had watched the weird video at a cabin 7 days before her death with 3 freinds. Her investigative efforts leads her to the shocking revelation that all four teenagers died at the same time on the same night and all from heart attacks. She delves deeper and finds a set of undeveloped photos of Katie's. She has them developed and the pictures reveal Katie and her friends all with horribly distorted faces posing in front of the cabin. She visits the cabin park and asks the owner if he had seen the teenagers in the night in question. While he goes to get the keys to the cabin in question she notices a videotape on a shelf and she takes it while the owners not looking. Rachel enters the cabin and whether you think its foolish or not she decides to watch the tape she snatched.

The video opens with a mysterious ring of light, then proceeds to various art-house images including a lighthouse, a ladder against a wall, dead horses lying on a beach, a young girl standing next to a well and the tape ends abruptly. While Rachel wonders about the rashness of her actions, the phone rings. She answers and a young girl states eerily ' You will die in seven days' and the line goes dead.

What has she done ?

Potentially she has made herself a target and the next victim of the curse of 'The Ring' !

She takes the tape to her ex partner and father to Aidan, Noah (Martin Henderson). She explains the story behind 'The Ring' and the possible consequences of watching it but Noah agrees to watch it and help her anyway.

Rachel: 'I think before you die, you see The Ring'

So Rachel and Noah have seven days to uncover the truth behind the videotape before it's power is potentially unleashed upon them. Can they do it in time ??

Theres your plot, what about the acting ?

The main character in the film Rachel Keller is played by Naomi Watts. I have only seen her once before in 'Mullholland Drive' and she is one of the up and coming actresses around. She doesn't play the stereotypical dumb blonde who screams at every turn (thankfully) in fact she's exactly the opposite. She keeps her cool and is smart, she slowly but surely pieces together the tragic story behind the video which encompasses The Ring's content. She is the emotional lynchpin of the film, effectively displaying emotions such as frustration, jealousy, vulnerability and humanity. Her coherance is vital because there's plenty of surprises in store for her and some of them scared me more than her. If anything she appears too smart at times, coming to correct conclusions and assumptions that any normal person would never do.

Martin Henderson who plays Rachel's ex partner is a relative newcomer and this appears to be his breakthrough role. However I think he is an achilles heel of the film, he just seems to drift through the film unnoticed. He doesn't stand out and his acting lacks energy or passion. A man in his position would be stretched to far greater emotional limits than he appeared to be.

David Dorfman who plays the kid Aidan did a very good job even if his character is heavily borrowed from by other films I care to mention like 'Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' for instance. It seems all supernatural thrillers have to have a kid who is mentally attached to the plot thesedays. Despite that, the kid did well. His deadpan face, his precocious style and his basin haircut gives him an image and an eerie presence about him.

Summing up !

I liked this film very much, I would go as far to say it is one of the best thrillers I have ever witnessed. Ok there are faults but when you think about it there are faults in any film, even the classics like 'The Shining'. I think this film will be the best film of it's type in 2003 and will go down as a classic.

I especially liked how the film developed, the details of this creepy story were revealed slowly but surely bit by bit, each one more shocking yet saddening than the one before. The scenery of the film heightened the tension too - a rural Washingon State island complete with it's misty surroundings created an eerie visual as did when events on the videotape crossed into reality. As the seven days the pair had to uncover the mystery passed by, so we are fed with images stating what day of the investigation it is thus basically preparing the audience for the climax with a countdown! When the climax does arrive, beware it is truly shocking, it isn't predicted and will scare even the cold hearted.

Another thing worth mentioning about the film is the clever way the direction draws parallel over several different angles such as how the mystery brings Rachel closer to her son who she seems mentally cut away from and also how her relationship with Noah begins to revive as they work together against The Ring and also how the truth of The Ring crosses events from the past into events in the present and how and why they are happening.

The movie is very much in the mould of a supernatural thriller rather than a shlock horror or a slasher movie. You don't see any blood and guts but what you do get is far better in my book. You get a nerve jangling, mind playing, edge of seat thriller that keeps on upping the stakes throughout the movie at a controlled pace until a shocking conclusion is met and then theres a twist, one that isn't predictable and one that works.

Genuinely scary films are so hard to find thesedays, the market has been far too saturated with teen - slasher movies for way too long. It's good to see a film working on your mind and concentrating on increasing the tension by using good cinematography and direction. The Ring is far from perfect and has a few questions that lay unanswered after the film had finished but I personally felt entertained and had been given a working over mentally. I definately detected an atmosphere in the cinema I watched it in - you could hear a pin drop as the audience was engrossed which enhanced my overall view of the film because it's a rarity thesedays unfortunately.

A word of warning for animal lovers, there is a very graphic and disturbing scene in this film which may distress or upset you.

The Ring is well made and entertaining, it will have you thinking and will cross into your dreams. In three words I would describe it as atmospheric, coherant and infectious.

I will leave you by giving you a quote from the film,

'Here we go, the world is spinning,, when it stops it's just beginning, sun comes up, we all laugh, sun goes down, we all die'

Before I saw this film I had been told so much about it, how scary it was, how my friends older brothers mates were all scared to go to the toilet alone and I had to see it, but I was quite disapointed, I wasnt at all scared by it like I thought I would be. I did enjoy it although it was quite complex and I left the cinema explaining it to the terrified people I was with. I've heard the japanese version is scarier so I might have to give that a go. Jenni xx :o)

I didn't really find the whole film overly terrifying, though the videotape in black and white images is eerie; the woman looking in the mirror scared me the palest white of whiteness (and I was watching this on a plane full of strangers :os) Great op. Joe
