After watching The Rescuers last night I decided that some things are best left in the past, because the memories are far better than the reality.
Synopsis
The film starts with a young girl throwing a bottle off the back of a Mississippi style steam boat, the bottle has a message on it, and through the glass we can see the word 'help'. The bottle drifts downstream and through the waters until it comes to rest close to the home of a few mice.
The mice take the bottle to the Rescue Aid Society, which is made up of mouse delegates from around the world. Bernard the janitor is instructed to retrieve the message, and when he does they can see that it is from an orphaned girl called Penny, who asks for help.
Hungarian delegate Miss Bianca offers to undertake the mission, but since this is the first time a female mouse has taken on a mission, Bernard is asked to accompany her.
So they set off to the orphanage to find out who Penny is, and why she needs help, but the mission is fraught with danger, everything from lions in the zoo, so guard crocodiles. Will Bernard and Bianca be able to find Penny?

My Thoughts
I remember seeing this film when I was a child, around about the same age as my daughter is now, and I loved it, it was one of my favourite films for a long time. Looking back on it now I'm sure the characters weren't that annoying and the songs weren't quite so dreadful!
Maybe dreadful is a bit harsh, but for a film that was made in the late 70's the songs are so 1950's, in fact older Disney films have more upbeat and better tunes. And it's not just my ages, even my daughter pulled a face at the music and had a little giggle to herself.
The cartoons are nicely drawn, but at some points there are huge differences in the brightness of the colours from the foreground to the background, so much so it reminded me of those sticker albums you get, where you place stickers that are supposed to blend in with the page, but they never do because one is matt and the other is shiny.
I also seem to remember Orville the Albatross being much funnier back in the 70's, but I think that can definitely be put down to age, because they haven't changed the story since putting onto DVD. Or it might be down to eras as well, neither of the kids found him particularly funny either, but then they're used to watching more dynamic programmes, and this film was just too sedate, and Orville's comic moments were too slow and drawn out.
It's still a nice film, your usual Disney film, with a poor bedraggled heroine, and an evil villain (in the guise of Medusa in this one), but sometimes things are best left in the past, and the memories looked at through rose tinted specs.
What a pity it didn't live up to the memories . . . sometimes things look much better on a big screen too . . . in a movie theatre you don't have the same distractions as you have when the film is enclosed in a little box

Advantages: Great entertainment, very colourful but I guess that's the way for most animations... Disadvantages: I remember it being quite long, for a kid....
