I only watched this film because I bought Sense and Sensibility and it had been stuck on the end of the tape, but I was pleasantly surprised.

It stars Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins as young housekeeper Miss Kenton and respectable butler Stevens respectively, with supporting roles from James Fox and Christopher Reeve.

Based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, it charts the growing affection between the two. When Miss Kenton leaves the household, Stevens is free to finally acknowledge his feelings for her but as she’s gone of to get married, it’s probably too late.

Remains of the Day received 8 Academy Award nominations and an Oscar nomination for Thompson, and James Ivory’s directing left little to be desired.

Not to everyone’s taste, and the ending was a little disappointing, but a great film none-the-less.
