The scenery is really lovely, and captures the era well, with subtle changes in weather reflecting the moods of the characters.
This is a film which stays in your mind, as so much is said with so little. The book is equally impressive, although I recommend you read the book first, otherwise you will only be able to imagine Stevens the Butler as Hopkins, the way he appears in the film.
The film is acted beautifully - Hopkins and Thompson really do their characters justice. The story of what was going on elsewhere in the house, which runs alongside the story of the relationship, is also engaging and emotional.
This is an excellent film if you like drama films and subtle but deep characters.
Advantages: Superb acting and brilliant storyline. Disadvantages: None
The Remains Of The Day is a touching story of unrequited love and blind devotion to duty, based on the novel by Ishiguro Kazuo. The film actually opens in the future. Darlington Hall, family pile of the late Lord Darlington, (James Fox) recently denounced as a Nazi sympathiser, has been sold to an American millionaire, Mr Lewis (Christopher Reeve). Stevens the butler (Anthony Hopkins) has stayed on. Butlering is all he knows, and all he expects to ... ...years ago he did have the chance of love with Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), the very attractive housekeeper. The unspoken passion between them simmered as both went about their duties. But Stevens denied his feelings for the sake of duty. Miss Kenton, unable to make the first move and unsure of Stevens’ feelings, eventually leaves Darlington Hall and marries in haste. The marriage is not a happy one, and many years later, as the marriage finally breaks ...

Advantages: Great cast, writing, score... Disadvantages: unfulfilling ending
...it had been stuck on the end of the tape, but I was pleasantly surprised.
It stars Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins as young housekeeper Miss Kenton and respectable butler Stevens respectively, with supporting roles from James Fox and Christopher Reeve. Based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, it charts the growing affection between the two. When Miss Kenton leaves the household, Stevens is free to finally acknowledge his feelings for her but as she’s ...

Advantages: Great lead performances and supporting cast. Disadvantages: Claustrophobic, lacks excitement
...with Miss Kenton (Thompson) and the film takes place with events leading up to the Second World War. During their time they form a close relationship but repress true feelings for each other. The subplot involves meetings between diplomats taking place within the hall which are to shape political foreign relations between America, Britain and Germany and the controversy that surrounds Lord Darlington’s friendship with right-wing extremists. The story ... ...during their time working at the hall and then 20 years later when they both reflect on their time together. The films famous supporting cast are excellent but it is Hopkins and Thompson who give the film subtlety and meaning. Hopkins deeply conveys a man unable to display political views or express desire properly and who has much dignity and authority but who is torn inside. The settings are quite claustrophobic but genuine as most of the film ...

Advantages: Great film Disadvantages: out takes scene misleading
perceive as "Out takes." I remain a little confuised tot his day as to there purpose on the dvd other than to provide and extra two deleted scenes. And the reason they have not been seen before is possibly because they are really not good!!.
So just quell that excitement over that section, but get the DVD anyway, the film, the extra scenes, and directors commentry more than make up for the dissapointing out takes. ...

Advantages: great after all these years, excellent villain Disadvantages: poor extras
with only a white vest and gun and the help of an overweight cop on the outside.
It's a great action film with an everyday hero who has a stack of one-liners. They say that a hero is only as good as his villain so Rickman is more than up to the job. It remains one of the most exciting and kick ass films to this day.
The R2 dvd has been available for over a year now and it's a decent effort if not great.
The film is in widescreen at 2.35:1. The picture is anamorphic for widescreen tv's. This isn't the best transfer by a mile, it's soft in places with a bit of dirt and grain but it's still quite watchable and by no means terrible.
Sound wise the film is naturally presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. With most films that were before the digital age the soundtrack sounds a bit hollow and lacks a certain clarity and punch. Still as you ...

Advantages: A great tribute. Stellar line-up. Benefits a worthy cause. Disadvantages: Some of the fashons are now very dated!
to the immense task of emulating Freddie Mercury and his voice was reedy and thin.
Also rather strangely Zucchero (who??) were included performing Las Palabras Del Amor (what? - maybe a more dedicated Queen fan could point out where this song came from - is it anything to do with Barcelona?)
Spinal Tap's performance was also left out, along with Def Leppard. I would much rather have seen the mighty Tap than Paul Young or Zucchini any day! On DVD, surely some of the second disc could have shown the remaining footage of the concert, rather than be filled up with extras.
--- Despite all these shortcomings, is it still worth buying? --
Definitely. The two disk set spans the length of Queen's career - from the seventies to the nineties. It is a rare showcase of musical talent and it is very well produced.
Parts are also very ...

DVD Description
James Ivory directed this quietly moving film set just prior to World War II. On the large English estate of Lord Darlington (James Fox), a disciplined butler, Stevens (Anthony Hopkins), devotes himself to his duties with rigorous dedication. Like his father (Peter Vaughan) before him, Stevens lives to serve--to bring order and certainty to the estate's minutiae. Though Stevens has the opportunity to break free of this mold in the form of a romance with the spirited housekeeper, Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), he chooses to remain within the safe structure of the household, even one that has misguided loyalties to Nazi Germany. Christopher Reeve and Hugh Grant costar as men hoping to show Lord Darlington the danger of his allegiances. THE REMAINS OF THE DAY is Merchant-Ivory's follow-up to HOWARDS END, which also starred Hopkins and Thompson; both actors were nominated for Academy Awards for their roles as dutiful servants in the later film.
