Advantages: Unusual horror movie with amazing actors Disadvantages: You won't want any popcorn with this movie!
I absolutely love horror movies of all sorts but don't usually get scared by them (unlike some people I could mention). The problem is that I WANT a horror movie that really scares me, not one that I just laugh at (although this is good too sometimes!). Since I can remember I have 'collected' scenes in different films that I have found truly frightening - when I say collect I just remember them rather than keep them on a video tape somewhere. There are still not that many - the scene from the Shining when the little kid goes reeeeedrum, reeeedrum for example and when the little kid in Flatliners keeps sneaking around Kiefer Sutherland's character (kids are creepy!) and one scene from Ravenous when one of the characters digs manically in the ground while looking completely demented.
I remembered this last scene for years and when I ...

Advantages: Original, experimental, thoughtful Disadvantages: None in particular
The Stranglers' second album, The Raven departs markedly from the gloriously sneering knockabout tales of personal misfortune that are scattered liberally around their debut album "Rattus Norvegicus".
This is an altogether odder affair, but curious though it may be the effort pays off. The album begins with the short but brisk and up-tempo vignette "Longships" which is a minute and a few seconds long, then jumps into the wonderful weirdness which is the title track itself, an oddly-chorded mix of twisted synth, crunching bass and vocals that recall someone retelling a seaborne nightmare.
Other songs such as "Genetix" showcase a more political thought process going on in the band, and possibly the highlight is in fact "Don't Bring Harry" a down-tempo, piano-led song which sounds more and more sinister the more attention you pay to ...
Advantages: Realistic, enjoyable, bittersweet. Disadvantages: Too short, some undeveloped characters, culture differences.

After finding a copy of A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers in a nearby bookshop and being told it was a good read by others I decided to buy it, and then I discovered I'd left my wallet in my other coat.
A few months later after forgetting to come back to that bookshop and buying that book I discovered 20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth in my local library, naturally I picked it up so I could finally see how good of an author Xiaolu Guo was and see whether or not I should go look for the other books she has written.
I can tell you now that I am planning on looking for a copy of her other works, she's brilliant.
