Although there are a few different remakes of this classic, the most popular of all has to be the '70's version of 'The Railway Children'.
Starring Jenny Agutter, Sally Thomsett and Gary Warren as the children, this great story also includes Bernard Cribbins, Dinah Sherriden, William Mervin and Iain Cuthbertson (to name but a few).
The original book was written by Edith Nesbit and the film is renowned to be an extremely close representation of the book (how refreshing that is alone).
Roberta, aka 'Bobbie' (Jenny Agutter), Phyllis (Saly Thomsett), and Peter (Gary Warren) are the three major characters in the film and centers around the children growing up in Edwardian England.
With their father being arrested and accused of being a spy, it is no longer possible for the Waterbury family to live comfortably in their London home. With the announcement that the family no longer has relevant funding, they are forced to move to the country.
Bobbie, Phyllis and Peter soon begin to explore their new surroudings and embark on many new adventures and experiences whilst also making new friends and dealing with poverty.
Lessons are learned the hard way with the stealing of coal, even for all the right reasons
From rescuing a young boy on a paper chase to stopping a locomotive with peticoats, The Railway Children really does offer something for all age ranges and brings a sense of nastalgia to a time when adults where to be respected and a stranger was a friend you hadn't met yet.
There are some good moving moments in this film and some I would like to mention, but if you haven't seen this film, I think I would ruin it for you.
This film is in the all time top 100 and I think it definatly deserves to be there. It is a U rating and suitable for all the family. Although todays generation is more into animation, I recommend this to children as I honestly do beleive much can be learnt from this film.
It is not what I would consider a sloppy weepy film but does contain moments that will tug on the heart strings. It has also been adapted for other countries and is a widely accepted popular film.
The ending although perhaps a little predictable left a cetain warm feeling with me and wraps up the story nicely. It incorporates the traits of such a film by bringing together trust, loyalty, understanding and a general sense of make the best of whats is available.
If this film is not in your classic collection, it should be.
In my opinion, this is classic british periodic drama at its best. *General Info* Sally Thomsett who plays Phyllis was actually 21 years old when this was made!
** I rate this film a 5 star **

Sorry for the low rating but looking at the category description from Ciao, I think this is meant to be about the ITV adaptation of the book.

I love this film and always cry shamelessly at the end! My children also adored it when they were younger. I liked the way you talked about the film in a way that didn't give too much away.

Advantages: An overall classic that is never too boring to watch again and again Disadvantages: Maybe not for everybody, really for people who enjoy a family film with excitement and adventure.
