Advantages: Great acting, nice story Disadvantages: Slightly unrealistic in places
Successfully making the transition from not-quite child sit-com star to bona fide Hollywood A-Lister, Smith is building his resume with an impressive repertoire of varied and interesting film roles. His turn in 'Ali' (2001) was a revelation and he continues the exciting character-acting here in 'Happyness' playing Chris Gardener, a man who only wants to provide for his family but is seemingly beaten down whichever way he turns. This tale of victory ... ...played with sublime brilliance by the principal actors and one which is highly recommended by this reviewer.
Of course, there's a little more to it than a man wanting to provide for his family. The story is set in San Francisco circa 1981, a pivotal chapter and period in Chris's life. Having used his life-savings to invest in a lorry-load of bone density machines that, in his own words, 'offer only a slightly better image than X-ray for twice the ...

Advantages: A good vibe film, Will Smith Disadvantages: The misspelling of happyness drives me insane!
...a travelling salesman, reliant on the commission from his sales to pay the bills and rent. The job is not as profitable as he had hoped and he and his partner, Linda, who works shifts in a factory, are struggling to make ends meet. But Chris has a plan. He wants to become a stockbroker. The only problem is, the only way to become one is to try to get an unpaid internship for six months. His pushiness gets him the internship, but Linda has had enough ... ...cannot bear bad spelling at the best of times, but to me, in this world full of people who already struggle to spell properly, to release a film the title of which is blatantly misspelt, is madness. Having now watched the film, the misspelling does make more sense - and Chris does point out that it should be an i and not a y - but I still think the title of the film should be correctly written. I am glad that I gave the film a chance in the end though, ...

The Pursuit of Happyness is a film that I have wanted to watch for a quite a while for two reasons. I always enjoy watching Will Smith and having discovered that his young son makes his debut in this film, I really wanted to see them act together. My second reason is that I was intrigued by the spelling of 'happyness' in the title and I wanted to find out if this is explained at all - which it is. So I eventually got this film on DVD and I have to ... ...up he finds himself on the streets with his son doing the best that he can. At the same time, he takes on an unpaid internship in a very competitive stockbrokers, desperate to land the one job on offer. The film tells of his struggle and his determination to succeed and is certainly a tribute to the man and his sheer hrd work.
I found this film incredibly moving. I think I always tend to associate Will Smith with comedy, probably due to his early ...

Advantages: great acting, realistic Disadvantages: -
...good. I had heard of the film 'The Pursuit Of Happyness' a while back but was never too sure what it was about. I decided to go onto the Apple website and have a look at the trailer to give me a better idea. It looked really good and I had bought the DVD so I was ready to watch a good film.
The film begins almost right away with Chris Gardner (Will Smith) as a sales man. Every day he wakes up with the mission of having to sell bone density machines ... ...can make some money. However, the market isn't too good for these and he never seems to sell anything meaning his whole day has gone to waste. His wife on the other hand is working so much doing double shifts as a cleaner of some kind just so they can survive. They are already three months behind on their rent which is not looking too good as they will soon be thrown out and they also have a son Christopher (Jaden Smith) to look after and support ...

Advantages: lots of pursuit... Disadvantages: less happyness!
Having missed this at the cinema, we bought this in a bulk buy offer at HMV. We finally got round to watching it last week and I would say it was worth the wait! A little cheesy in places and not filled with plot twists, but an entertaining, enjoyable film. I enjoy Will Smith's acting and I was keen to see his son, Jayden, make his film debut
Synopsis
Chris Gardner (Will Smith) is scraping a living selling medical equipment, struggling to keep ... ...he does for a living. The man is a stockbroker and tells him all you need to succeed as a stockbroker is to be "good with figures and good with people" which gets Chris to thinking.
He applies for a 6 month internship position, which will give him a chance at becoming a stockbroker. The position is unpaid, gruelling and will only lead to a career for 1 in 20 of the people on the program. When his wife leaves him and the money runs out, Chris and ...

Advantages: Some committed performances. Disadvantages: Hackneyed writing and sickly sentimentality.
...and piano refrains that are a desperate attempt to tug at the heart strings. That might work first time round, but not after they have been repeated for the umpteenth time. Then there are the serious string-led arrangements that try to make you believe you’re watching a serious piece of art rather than a film. But it’s all been done before and far better by other composers that believe the emotions they are trying to convey. Here Guerra’s compositions are so derivative it’s impossible to feel his sincerity.
“The Pursuit of Happyness” is one of those films that is so saccharine that it makes your teeth hurt. It is also excessively long and boring, so after the first plodding half-an-hour it’s nigh on impossible to care about any of the characters or their predicament. Although the performances are committed, there is little that the actors can do...

DVD Description
Will Smith is a father struggling to take care of his young son in this touching tale based on a true story. In San Francisco circa 1981, Chris Gardner's (Smith) luck has run out. A bad business investment, a bevy of parking tickets, and back taxes in addition to rent, childcare, and groceries keep him constantly scrambling for cash. Chris thinks his luck is changing when he is accepted into a highly competitive internship program at a brokerage firm. But the internship is unpaid and soon, despite his best efforts, Chris and his five-year old son, Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith--Will Smith's real life son), find themselves homeless. Chris might spend his days training to invest and make millions, but he and Christopher spend their nights in shelters and public transportation stations. Gardner's story is a testament not only to the love between a father and son, but also to the strength of the human spirit. Will Smith turns in a fine, nuanced performance as a man determined to protect his son and make a life for himself and his family. Jaden Smith is an adorable scene-stealer as young Christopher. The real-life father and son pairing translates well onto the big screen; the two have terrific natural chemistry. Their affection for each other is apparent, even as they weather the tough times. This is Italian director Gabriele Muccino's (THE LAST KISS, REMEMBER ME MY LOVE) first film in the English language. Thandie Newton also stars as Christopher's overworked and defeated mother in this tearjerker which was inspired by a segment on the television news program 20/20.
