The Producers is one of those films that I've wanted to see for a long time. I can't to be honest think why this is the case but it is and so when I noticed it whilst out shopping the other day I simply had to buy it.
Now I knew upon purchasing the film that I was going to be a musical style film with a good helping of humour and to be fair that is what I received. I must say however, and this is reflected in my rating of the film, that I was expecting something else. Now what this something else is I don't know either but all I can tell you is that I was expecting a little sparkle that just wasn't there.
The Producers tells the story of Leo Bloom an accountant and a down on his luck producer Max Bialystock who despite Leo's initial reluctance plot a somewhat bent get rich scheme. This scheme however will only succeed if the play that they produce is a complete flop. The money they have then raised to invest in the play will be theirs and they'll be raking it in.
With this in mind the pair go on a hunt to find the worst play ever written and dually stumble upon a play titled "Springtime with Hitler" written by a denying everything Nazi called Franz. Next they hire the worst actors and a director with no talent and simply sit back confident that everything will go according to their faultless plan. But is a plan ever faultless….
This film is certainly entertaining and the whole idea for the film, taken from the award winning musical show, is definitely interesting but like I mentioned earlier the show does lack a certain something that makes you feel a tad let down at the end.
I was however quietly impressed by the musical performances of the entire cast. The songs especially ones such as "Springtime with Hitler" and "I wanna be a producer" are exceptionally catchy and in my opinion the vocals of the entire case are on the whole extremely good. The dance routines or moves performed with the songs are also top-notch and for me it is this musical side of the film that really pulls the rest of it along and so I am thankful that the majority of the film is musical.
The acting on the whole is also very good. Nathan Lane pulls off a really good performance as the over anxious Leo Bloom and Matthew Broderick seems perfectly cast as Max Bialystock. It is for me however Will Ferrell as Franz Liebkind that really steals the show, he seems to be funny without going over the top and really plays the stereotypical type of character that is just what the film needs. It is therefore only Uma Thurman as Ulla, the producer's Swedish receptionist, that doesn't really cut it for me. If sure it's not Uma acting however but the fact that I'm not quite certain what part her character really has and whether she is needed at all as she doesn't really seem to add anything to the film as a whole.
As you can see therefore this film is nothing spectacular but neither is it a total drag. It is unfortunate in my opinion that the film is lacking that certain something to make it special, as I think it has all the right materials to be a great film. I wouldn't therefore advise that you rush out and buy a copy of this film but if you see it going cheap anywhere then it is certainly something you should consider picking up, as for a piece of light and reasonably humorous entertainment it isn't too bad.

Advantages: Great song and dance routines and a marvellous central performance from Lane Disadvantages: A touch too stagey and a less endearing turn from Broderick
