Teen actress Anne Hathaway gives an endearing performance in Garry Marshall's delightful Disney comedy, THE PRINCESS DIARIES. Assisted by such seasoned pros as Julie Andrews and...
more...Hector Elizondo (a Marshall regular), Hathaway shines here in her first major film role. She plays Mia, a high school misfit who has resigned herself to social invisibility. Mia and her best friend, Lilly (Heather Matarazzo), are outcasts. While Lilly relishes the role, Mia just wishes a cute popular boy she likes, Josh (Erik von Detten), would notice her. Mia's life changes dramatically when her grandmother (Andrews) contacts her and Mia finds out she is heir to the throne of Genovia, a small European country between France and Spain. The klutzy, socially awkward girl doesn't think she's up to the job, but she agrees to be coached in regal manners by her grandmother before deciding if she wants to become a princess. Marshall (PRETTY WOMAN) is clearly in his element directing this light, charming teen comedy. Andrews, perfectly cast as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, makes her character seem both imperious and caring. Hathaway's performance and the presence of teen pop star Mandy Moore assure that young girls, in particular, will enjoy the film.

This film is based on a book by Meg Cabot. Well, more than on of her books in fact. But, as regretable as it is for my age I have actually read all of the books and eagerly awaited the arrival of this film.
I was not too dissapointed because even though the film did not follow the books to the letter it still did them enogh justice to warrent repeated watching of this film.

The story itself follows the tale of a 15 year old glasses wearing girl who is far from being the most popular girl in school. The character of Mia is played excellently by Anne Hathaway who fits the exact the picture in my mind when I was reading the book.
Mia's main goal in life is become invisible, and she invariablly manages it when a fellow school student tries to sit on her because he hasnt seen her there. She is extreamly shy, and even throws up during a debate class. This leads to the typical high school teasing of class mates and much embarassment on her part.
Mia is a perfectly normal teenage girl until she learns that her father was in fact prince of a small principality called Genovia. Her father had died some years before and her grandmother (Julie Andrews) is hoping to abdocate her thrown in the foreseeable future. Mia is the only heir and so is forced to submit to the unenviable task of 'Princess Lessons' taught by her grandmother.
At this news Mia is sudenly forced into the public eye, gains the attention the most popular girl in schools boyfriend and has to have a boyguard follow her everywhere.

Watch the ups and downs of Mias life and that of the people around her. It will make you laugh out loud in places and even make you cry. It is a tradtional girly movie and will appeal to young girls of all ages and older ones who have a love of silly light hearted films.

An excellent supporting cast, Hector Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, and Robert Schwartzman contribute to the charm of the film and Julie Andrews is as amazing as ever, as is Anne Hathaway.
