I have three of the Princess Diaries books by Meg Cabot. I must say that the books were duller than ever, set in a diary format that didn't interest me in the slightest but since I was given them as birthday presents I read them. When The Princess Diaries 1 came out I found it on offer in Woolworths and I thought it was worth a try, and when I watched it I was pleasantly surprised! So when the second film came out we got it on DVD and I was just as pleased with it.
+*¨^¨*+ The Princess Diaries 1 +*¨^¨*+ THIS SECTION MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVENT SEEN IT
The original Princess Diaries is a bout a 15 year old girl named Mia Thermopolis, whose life turns upside down when she discovers that she is the only heir to the Genovian throne. Her grandma, the queen of Genovia, comes to visit to tell her that she is actually a princess, and when she turns 16 she must decide whether she wants to pursue her grandmother's wishes and take the role as the upcoming queen of Genovia. Of course, there is a lot more involved but it isn't relevant as this is only a quick summary. At the end of the film we see Mia at the Independence Day Ball, announcing that she will become the princess of Genovia and the rightful heir to the throne.
+*¨^¨*+ The Princess Diaries 2 +*¨^¨*+
In the next film, Princess Mia has flown to Genovia to take "royalty lessons" in preparation for taking position as queen. Viscount Mabrey is infuriated at the idea of her becoming queen and desperately wants his nephew to rule as king, and so he makes things difficult for the royal family by bringing up a law that is rarely used and little known stating that, "A princess must marry before taking the throne." The Genovian Parliament cannot do anything to stop this law being enforced, and so they give Mia 30 days to marry. As you would expect, Mia is astonished and annoyed that she will now have to agree to an arranged marriage, but she looks at a list of eligible bachelors and finally chooses Andrew Jacoby, the Duke of Kenilworth.
Viscount Mabrey then has his nephew Nicholas woo Princess Mia in another desperate bid for him to become King. Mia is confused and worried about marrying somebody she hardly knows, but will she end up doing it? The ending brings an unexpected twist...
+*¨^¨*+ My Opinion +*¨^¨*+
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, and I would no doubt watch it again. I liked this film because it shows the thoughts feelings of the main character Mia, being a teenager and having to marry in 30 days and how she copes with it all. I disliked it because it wasn't something that is ever likely to happen and it was quite unrealistic, but overall it was good.
+*¨^¨*+ Recommendations +*¨^¨*+
I would recommend this film to teenagers because they can relate to the main character but it is also a great family film, rated U. The genre was a mix of comedy and romance, and if you liked similar films such as Narnia and Shrek the Third, this is one you'll probably enjoy. I do recommend this film, I thought it was funny and somehow like a fairytale.
