So, it's a Sunday evening. You've had a lazy day. You've finished your book and written a review. There's not much on the TV. So what do you do? Put on a DVD of a nice grown up film. Well, that's what any sensible person would do. I watched the Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
Starring Anne Hathaway, Princess Diaries 2 was released in 2004, the sequel to the popular Princess Diaries. Both movies are Disney "princess" movies, so you can't really go into them expecting too much. I haven't actually seen the first film, but I can report that you get an adequate summary of it at the start of Princess Diaries 2; the story is condensed into a five minute catch up, and I now feel like I have seen both films.
In the first movie, our heroine Mia (Hathaway) learns she is the heir to the throne of Genovia, a fictional country. Now, in Princess Diaries 2, she has finished college in America and is returning to Genovia to learn how to be a queen and to take over the throne from her grandmother. But oh no! Parliament decrees she must first of all take a husband - within 30 days or the throne will go to the scheming Lord Nicolas! Will our plucky heroine find a husband? Will true love win through? Do you care??
The story is as transparent as a freshly washed window. With no prior knowledge of the plot, I had figured everything out within 15 minutes. It may be a Disney film, but it wasn't all going to go smoothly - there had to be some obstacles thrown in Mia's way. But being Disney, it is of course a happy ever after story.
The acting was....well, appropriate I suppose. Anne Hathaway was exactly the kind of cool princess that little girls will love - the only other film I have seen her in (that I can think of) is The Devil Wears Prada, and I see little difference between her in that and in Princess Diaries 2, so I'm not too impressed with her acting range so far. Mia's grandmother the Queen (Julie Andrews) was elegantly regal, but also rather hip; the best friend Lilly (Heather Matarazzo) wasn't as pretty as Mia, and was suitably loud and outspoken; the royal staff were all adoring of the family they serve. In short, the characters exactly fitted the formula you would expect from a Disney princess movie, and the actors portrayed them adequately.
Why I watched this to the end I don't know. It was painfully clichéd, and I knew exactly what was going to happen from early on. I was so appalled by the cheesy bridal shower scene that I almost turned it off, but I couldn't stop torturing myself. This scene would have been heaven for little girls, the kind of thing they would dream of - instead of going out on the town, getting hammered and seeing a stripper like most 21 year olds would, Mia has a slumber party for princesses. Most of whom are under the age of 10. They mattress slide down the ceremonial staircase. They rollerblade round the entrance hall. They have a cabaret. Even one of the footmen starts dancing.
I also had problems with the name Genovia - it is far too close to Gibrovia, the name of the "emerging nation" that Billy Connelly made up in his 1985 An Audience With... show to illustrate how depressing the British national anthem is - "We come from Gibrovia, And we don't give a s***". If you haven't seen it, do. Hilarious.
Little girls will adore this. It is full of sumptuous royal sets, a cool princess, beautiful princes, chaste romance, and of course the dream that any ordinary girl could find out she is a princess.
I love Disney, I really do. The animated classics are just that, classics. They are works of art. And of course there are modern live action films like Pirates of the Caribbean, which I absolutely adore, and The Chronicles of Narnia, which isn't bad. But this...this is not a film for the whole family. It is a film for little girls, up to maybe the age of 12. And the parents who have the misfortune to have to sit through it. It is not a film for anyone over the age of 12 to watch through choice. Yet for some reason I chose to put Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement on, and then sat through it...I will be making an appointment with my doctor.
Advantages: It was funny and entertaining Disadvantages: Quite unrealistic
I have three of the Princess Diaries books by Meg Cabot. I must say that the books were duller than ever, set in a diary format that didn't interest me in the slightest but since I was given them as birthday presents I read them. When The Princess Diaries 1 came out I found it on offer in Woolworths and I thought it was worth a try, and when I watched it I was pleasantly surprised! So when the second film came out we got it on DVD and I was just ... ...WHO HAVENT SEEN IT
The original Princess Diaries is a bout a 15 year old girl named Mia Thermopolis, whose life turns upside down when she discovers that she is the only heir to the Genovian throne. Her grandma, the queen of Genovia, comes to visit to tell her that she is actually a princess, and when she turns 16 she must decide whether she wants to pursue her grandmother's wishes and take the role as the upcoming queen of Genovia. Of course, there ...

In the first film we find out that teenager Mia is in fact a princess of a land called Genovia, and that it is likely that she will become the queen! Advantages: this is a fantastic film Disadvantages: does not appeal to boys
these two films are fantastic to watch for young girls, teenage girls and young women adults, even my mother who is in her 50's loved this film and has watched it again and again.
both films are funny and romatic at the same time. they are both brilliant fairytail films and are well worth watching if you have not already seen them.
the first film is about a young girl (mia) who is not popular at school and finds out from her grandmother who has not been in her life much, that her dead father was a prince and she is a princess. her grandmother tells her this as she needs the mia to become the next queen of Genovia. however mia find the transition from not so popular girl to queen hard.
the second film, shows mia about to be crowned queen of Genovia but the rules state that she needs to be married, so the story shows her trying ...
Advantages: fun for all the family Disadvantages: none
Excellent dvd that combines both the first and second PrincessDiaries. Well worth a watch one for the whole family and kids of any age. Girls especially will love this film as it features all the must have elements comedy, fashion and make up, romance and good looking boys/men, so one for the mums too! Both of these films are charming starring Ann Hathaway who makes an excellent Princess Mia and Julie Andrews as the Queen of Genovia (Andrews is as wonderful in this as in the sound of music) the storyline is easy to follow and is full of very funny moments. Another excellent release from the wonderful world of Walt Disney who never seem to let us down. ...
Advantages: Fairytale story of poor to princess, every girls dream, also good comedy value Disadvantages: seem to have heard the story line before, very similar to all other modern cinderella stories.
The first movie begins very well, showing a young girl who wishes to have it all, as usual. The story line is somewhat let down by her never knowing her father or that he was a prince and has recently died meaning that she was next in line to the throne of Genovia. This is of course slightly far fetched for us adults but they had to get her to turn into a princess some how and i'm sure children would love the idea, and will soon be asking if they were by any chance adopted! The comical story line in actually trying to get her to behave like a princess is sweetly thrilling. In this film the young girl (Mia) goes through it all, heart ache, falling out with her best friends, falling out and reuniting with her mother and attempting to become a princess. There was a lovley feel good factor to this film and one of my most favourite cinderella ...
Princess Mia, the future queen of Genovia, finds her right to succession challenged. Still single, and with dreams of finding her own prince charming, she finds herself brought down to earth with a bump when she is presented with someone she considers unsuitable but is still expected to do her duty.

As a teenager, ugly duckling Mia (Anne Hathaway) learned that she was actually a princess. Now that the Princess has completed college in America, she is returning to her country, Genovia. Since Mia is turning 21, Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews) plans to step down and give her granddaughter the throne. But evil Viscount Mabrey (Jonathan Rhys-Davies) believes his nephew is the rightful heir, and Parliament decides that Mia will have to abide by an age-old Genovian law: no Queen shall rule without a husband. Mia has just thirty days to marry if she is to retain the throne that her family has held for over 500 years. The kindhearted but clumsy princess also has to win over the Genovian people and survive the constant paparazzi. Although a charming Englishman (Callum Blue) seems to fit the arranged marriage bill, Mia also finds herself drawn to the very man that is vying for the throne, the dashing Nicholas (Chris Pine). But can she trust her foe's intentions
