This tends to be viewed as classic cheesy Christmas viewing, but on watching it actually has some good substance to it. I have never had the delight of watching this before, for some reason every Christmas the family would be watching something else, but I must say it exceeded my expectations. Gene Hackman plays a rebellious priest who ends up by the force of his personality leading the survivors to safety. The 'clever bit' is that the ship is upside down so they have to get to what is actually the bottom of the ship, to get to the top of the sea!
The characters were interesting and varied, though a little cliched - the stock middle aged woman, the women in tight clothes (handy when they get wet!. The older couple were quite appealing though, in their devotion to each other. I liked the character mix overall, and none were deeply unlikeable, so you were willing them all to get through and admiring their will to survive.
The setpieces were good, and the scenery. The ship looked very realistic for the most part, not bad considering it was way before CGI and Titanic! The ballroom and the Christmas tree scene was one which stood out, as the passengers realised what had happened and started panicking.
Something else which struck me was that it wasn't all about a ship sinking, panic, pandemonium, screaming etc. There were some important themes at work here - religion and faith, with our renegade priest having these issues, and love played a vital part, between couples and the more general love for fellow man (religious element again).
So yes, if you haven't seen it yet, it is better than Titanic in that there is more action, less schmoozing! Definitely worth a watch and even a place on the DVD shelves!
