fleet of satellites and interplanetary probes. And the closer we look the more astonishing they are: Mars' deserts were once home to rivers and oceans; on Jupiter wind speeds reach 10 000 kph (6 000 mph) and storms rage for centuries; Saturn is surrounded by a swarm of 34 moons; and diamonds are believed to rain from Neptune's blue skies. Moving out from the Sun every planet and moon is visited in a journey that takes us a full light year into space out to the fringes of the solar system where the Sun is no longer the brightest star in the sky. With 200 spectacular images "The Planets" follows the tracks of robotic rovers over Mars plunges through Titan's atmosphere on the back of the Hugyens probe smashes into a comet with Deep Impact and voyages to the edge of our solar system to discover the frozen planets that lurk beyond the orbit of Pluto.

As someone who used to eagerly watch all of the BBC "Horizon" documentaries about space exploration, when the corporation commissioned this eight-part series back in the late 1990s to tell the story of the our Solar System, I was in seventh heaven.
This two-disc set has all eight 50 minute episodes (there are no extras accompanying them, but that is no great hardship). Arguably the most comprehensive account of the exploration of the Solar System, the series used state-of-the-art CGI, archive film stock (some of it rare or unseen footage) and interviews with leading scientists involved in the various missions.
The eight episodes are as follows:
"Different Worlds" - a look at space travel and the latest (for 1999) planetary exploration missions "Terra Firma" - the story of the pioneering missions to Mars and Venus "Giants" - the story of the Pioneer and Voyager missions to the Outer Planets "Moon" - exploration of the Moon and its mysteries "Star" - a new perspective on the Sun "Atmosphere" - Earth is not the only planet or moon to have an atmosphere "Life" - a look at the latest robotic explorations (for 1999) "Destiny" - a look at the future of the Solar System
To take just one of these episodes at random, "Giants" tells the story of the Voyager 1 and 2 missions to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune between 1977-1989. Using archive footage from launches and actual photographs sent back by the probes, in addition to CGI that demonstrates certain theories in play, the back story of the mission is explained (with the lowly graduate who first came up with the idea given his own 'five minutes' to explain how), together with the rationale behnd the Pioneer 10 and 11 probes that were sent ahead to see what conditions the more elaborate Voyagers would encounter. Going by the detailed explanations, the sumptuous CGI and awe-inspiring real-life photos, plus the obvious enthusiasm that the commentators bring to the story, it is a delight to sit through. Although the explanations are not 'dumbed down', they remain accessible to a wider audience as the story of the Voyager missions is laid out relatively simply, in a linear fashion and the scientific terms are explained in detail so that they do not get in the way of the story-telling.
"The Planets" is a fine example of documentary-making, exactly what the BBC can accomplish when it is at its best. This DVD is recommended to anyone who has an interest in what lies in the dark reaches of the Solar System.
Advantages: wonderful documentary series Disadvantages: none!
The Blue Planet was a wonderful documentary series narrated by the excellent David Attenborough, and first shown on the BBC in 2001. We enjoyed the series so much when it was shown that we subsequently bought the DVD and often enjoy watching the occasional episode. Now our daughters are growing up a bit they enjoy watching it too and on the whole it does make great family viewing.
The Blue Planet series was five years in the making and is an exploration and study of all the earth's oceans and seas - hence the title. It is fascinating and informative and is totally absorbing to watch. We have got the three DVD box set which is what I am going to write about but it's also worth noting that there is also a 4DVD special edition set too. Whichever, you watch though, The Blue Planet provides wonderful viewing for any nature lover.

At the end of the film Leo finds out that he isd not just on another planet, he has travelled in time and the mothership that followed him to rescue him ended up on the planet hundreds of years before leo did, I am not going to tell you all the plot because their are more twists and at the very end a big shock for Leo on earth.

xx-- My intro---xx
An epic collection of five discs.
The collection comprises of all of the Planet Earth episodes shown on BBC1 as well as a bonus -Planet Earth - the future. This bonus dvd accompanies the book of the same name and looks at saving species and asks the question do we face an extinction crisis. We also learn about how we can save certain species.
xx--Bonus content--xx
This bonus disk also looks at pollutiion, climate change and the growing human population -- all of which are putting pressure on to the natural wilderness.
It delves into issues such as why previously uninhabited areas are paramount for our survival, as well as the survival of some of the worlds best known animal life.
We also look at living together-the challenges facing the planet and living together in such remote areas in the 21st century ...
