Pickwick Hotel, San Francisco

Advantages: Cheap, Convenient
Disadvantages: Prehaps too far from Fishermans Wharf if only a stop-over break?

I stayed at the Pickwick with 3 friends in April 2007. It's a very pleasant hotel situated within walking distance of the cable car turnaround and Union Square, and can't be faulted for it's price given the fairly central location for shopping/business. It's probably about 20 minutes to Fishermans Wharf via cable car from here. The general area felt safe at night, it was very, very quiet in terms of people being around - probably due to the fact that most surrounding buildings were retail/office space. There were a few homeless people near the hotel, but having visited many cities on our US tour, it's pretty obvious that San Francisco is one of the worst hit places. It seems that someone wants a dollar every 50 yards in San Francisco. The room which we had was situated at the rear of the building away from the road, so was quiet ...

Review of The Pickwick, San Francisco

Sporting edition

Advantages: Good easy to read book
Disadvantages: Slow start

The Pickwick Papers. A little about the author. Charles Dickens was a great social reformer, most of his books were written to highlight the plight of the lower classes. He was a frequent visitor to the house of commons and campaigned vigorously against debtors prisons. Why the book was written. Charles Dickens was commissioned to write a series of stories about sporting events in England. Having little or no interest in sport he came up with the idea of a group of friends travelling around the villages of England and reporting what they saw. A taste of the book. This then was the birth of the Pickwick club. A cricket match gives us the sporting excuse for the paymaster but it is the picture of the people that Dickens paints that steal the limelight. The characters are all typically Dickensian and are described ...

Review of The Pickwick Papers - Charles Dickens

Its only made of paper

Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: none

Gosh these simple cheap paper light shades take me back a few years. The love nest (we shared the attic room) I shared with my boyfriend in a student house in the early seventies had the identical shade to the one in this picture. The reason why? Yes it was dirt cheap. The modern equivalent is only £2.99 for a 12, a larger 12 inch £3.49inch ball shade the larger 16 inch £3.99 available at http://www.discount-lighting-store.co.uk/subprod/paper-lamp-shades-0001801.aspx... Similar ones from habitat cost about £4 or £5. Of course you can buy more elaborate paper shades some different shaped ones Argos has a set of three Sphere, cube and prism shaped. For £4.89. Paper Disney character shades can be bought for your children?s rooms for about a fiver each. These light shades are quite good as they are quite neutral will not ...
