The Piano Teacher [2001] [DVD]

An unexpected critical (Grand Prix at Cannes) and commercial (three months in London's ... more

West End) success on its release in 2001,The Piano
Teacheris a provocative, but ultimately
frustrating, film. The intensifying relationship
between Erika Kohut, a Viennese piano teacher
whose musical focus is gradually undone by sexual
repression, and Walter Klemmer, her uninhibited
but unsuspecting student and admirer, lacks an
underlying motivation, either physical or
emotional, to sustain the tortuous encounters of
the film's later stages.Director Michael Haneke
powerfully evokes the claustrophobic décor of the
flat that Kohut shares with her dictatorial yet
ineffectual mother, with whom her relationship
progresses from the pitiful to the farcical. And
farce of the blackest kind is what the film
descends to, as Kohut and Klemmer play out a
vicious game of sado-masochistic control with an
intriguing but indecisive conclusion.Isabelle
Huppert is magnificently assured as Kohut, but
Benoît Magimel often seems confused as Klemmer,
while Annie Girardot resorts to a caricature of
the mother. Fans of classical piano will enjoy the
masterclass and rehearsal sequences during the
first hour, though music is then relegated to a
minor role--its deeper relevance to the film being
ultimately difficult to define. English subtitles
are provided, and the monochrome shades in which
the scenes abound come through with suitably wan
intensity. Yet it's hard not to feel that a more
profound inquiry into the darker side of sexual
desire has been lost along the way. --Richard

THE PIANO TEACHER - (LA PIANISTE)

Advantages: Excellent physcological study of character.
Disadvantages: Grim, brutal, shocking scenes of a sexual nature.

=== The Piano Teacher ===

The Piano Teacher is a subtitled film of the Phycological Drama genre. Released in 2001 it is also known by it's French name La pianiste. Directed by Michael Haneke, it is based on the novel by Die Klavierspielerin which won a Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004.
Graphic in it's content this film delves into the darker side of sex, including fetishism, bondage, and sado/masochism. It ...
...is played played by the wonderful actress Isabelle Huppert, Who has an impressive 75+ films under her belt. Erica is a sexually repressed woman, dull, straight laced, and uptight. She dresses in a severe, matronly manner that belies her forty something years. Hair scraped back, and unadorned she disguises any feminine traits she may posses. She is matter of fact to the point of bluntness, cold, and appears without emotion. But under this facade lies ... more

The Piano Teacher

Advantages: Stunning performances from Huppert, Magimel and Giradot, brilliant music
Disadvantages: Controversial and disturbing

...discovers that she has attracted the attentions of the young and good looking man Walter Kramer (Magimel) who is a very talented piano player himself, he first interviews for his masterclass as a false pretence to pursue her, despite her icy cold personality Walter is still not put of and follows Erika home, where she draws up a list of all the sexual acts which she would like Walter to participate in with her, Walter is disgusted by Erika's demands. ...
...Magimel provdies great support in the film as the infatuated Walter, and Annaie Giradot is fantastic as Erikas domineering mother who has a love/hate relationship with her daughter. I love the scenes where we see long shots of Erika's face, and she just gives of an icy cold stare, and you can almost see what she's thinking. In parts throughout the film you really hate her character, and at times you really feel sorry for her. Some people may find ...

The funniest comedy I have ever seen

Advantages: Its got great loveable but annoying characters
Disadvantages: Nothing

I have all the Black Books dvds although I bought them seperately for £7 each with a student discount on top of that. This has got to be my favourite tv series of all time. Even though I have seen each episode a million times, it still makes me laugh til I cry. I think the best moments are when Manny is dressed as a bookworm for the story telling, when his parents come to visit and there is the little bar under the resturant table, when manny works in the next door bookshop and when the blind piano teachers come to hear Fran play but its really Manny inside the piano with spoons! The main characters are Bernard, Manny and Fran. Bill Bailey is my favourite comedian and he is great as Manny. All three are great comedy genius's and they play their parts so well. All of their series are based around the consumption of alcohol ...

to the strong language. It costs about £14 on Amazon, but you could probably buy it cheaper on eBay or play.com. 1. The Entertainer In this episode Fran decides that she wants to learn how to play the piano. She thinks she must be musical as she owns loads of CDs. She hires a piano teacher and almost immediately decides that she has no musical talent at all. But her teacher refuses to leave until she has learnt how to play. Fran discovers Manny is a natural pianist. She enrols him in a plan to trick her teacher, who is blind, in to thinking that she can suddenly play. Bernard also uses Manny new found skill to try and impress his new girlfriend. 2. Fever As a heat wave hits London, Bernard starts to look for a "summer girlfriend". He becomes obsessive and because of this ignores Manny's warnings of when the temperate rises to ...
