Advantages: Excellent performances, story and sound track Disadvantages: None
making to have challenged so many people to confront their own prejudices and ignorance. Dealing with the highly provocative subject of homosexuality and AIDS, Philadelphia does an excellent job of disbanding many of the myths surrounding both of the subjects. Not only does Philadelphia tell a powerful story of injustice, it is also a beautifully shot film, which has many scenes which will tug at your heart strings. It also allowed Tom Hanks to demonstrate that he was more than capable of performing serious roles as he had previously been better known for his comedy roles. There were some critics who suggested that Hanks was not convincing as a homosexual, what did they expect a bloke wearing lipstick, lycra and high heals. Part of the beauty of the film was that it attempted to destroy society's stereotypes of how homosexuals looked and acted ...

Advantages: A beautiful story Disadvantages: Just a shame it happens for real
This is one of the most beautiful films I have seen. I went to the cinema with my mum and dad to see it when it first came out. We didnt really know what to expect but were amazed and touched by what we saw.
The story very simply is about Tom Hank's character who is gay and is sadly diagnosed with HIV and the effects of this at his work.
The cast play their parts quite wonderfully from Tom Hanks playing the part of a man full of life who begins to get sick and eventually passes away to Denvel Washington who is the homophobic lawyer who soon changes his beliefs when he views life from a homophobic perspective.
The ending is one of the saddest I've seen with a simple showing of the video of the young Tom Hanks with Philadelphia by Paul Simon playing over the top. If it doesnt bring you to tears I dont know what will ...
Advantages: An excellent production that will appeal to any fan of classic TV and SF. Disadvantages: Because it's a recording, it loses some of the excitement of watching it live.
I watched this film on BBC4 when it was first broadcast, and I was impressed that it went so well, so when I saw the DVD on sale for £10 earlier this year, I snapped it up. If (like me) you're a fan of classic era TV (by which I mean the TV of the 50s, 60s and 70s) and especially if you're a fan of classic TV SF, then this DVD is a must purchase. Not because it's old - it was only made in 2005 - but because it was a deliberate attempt to pay homage to 1950s TV drama by employing the same methods that were available to TV production companies 50 years ago. By this, I mean it was broadcast live, with just the occasional pre-recorded film insert used when necessary - exactly the way the original TV serial was made.
The original version of "The Quatermass Experiment" was a six part TV serial made by the BBC in 1953 and written by Nigel ...
