My mums a big Andrew Llloyd Webber fan, so I've gorwn up listening to her playing Cd's of songs from his various musicals . So, I already knew a few of the songs from this musical, but until recently I'd never seen it. It was while listening to me bawling along to one of the songs during a skype call that my boyfriend commented he also loved the song, and the film . When I said I'd never seen it, we decided that I'd watch it when I visited his house, and I'm glad we did .
The movie centres on Christine Daae, the orphaned daughter of a famous violinist, who told her before he died that an angel of music would watch over her and guide her talents . Growing up in the Opera house in Paris, Christine often hears a voice she believes to be this angel coaching her in her singing. Indeed, he coaches her so well that when the current reigning diva storms off in a temper one evening, Christine, a lowly chorus girl, is able to step into the breech, delivering a perfect performance that wins the heart of the audience, and captivates one person in particular - her childhood sweetheart Raoul, whom she hasn't seen for many years . However, as Raoul begins to make his feelings for Christine clear, the 'angel' dramatically reveals himself to Christine, and begins to make his own demands on her affections, and on the management of the theatre, with dangerous consequences when his demands are not met.
The soundtrack to this movie (which, with it being a musical is the main feature) is simply stunning . None of this softly softly, nonsense, no camp theatricals, just big, booming, pieces of music . In some places, it's almost like rock music - pounding drums, heavy guitar riffs , and in others, its slow, sweet, and melodic. I like the way they take strong tunes and use them as refrains throughout, tying the whole story together nicely.
Obvious stand out tunes incluce (naturally) The Phantom of The Opera, which is a powerful, almost rock type number, performed as a duet by Christine and the Phantom. Musically, its incredibly powerful, managing to convey the danger than emanates from the phantom, and the lyrics are also good - not only managing to convey the threat , but also to illustrate the strong emotional bond that exists between Christine and her 'angel'. Such lines as 'I am the mask you wear' 'Its me they hear' illustrate their reliance on each other - Christine relying on the phantom for musical help, and the phantom relying on Christine because he loves her .
'Think of me' is another particularly good track, a sweet love song in a mildly operatic style, with lyrics about remembering past loves fondly - and is perfectly placed in this film at the moment when Raoul remember Christine and his feelings for her.
'The Music of the Night' 'All I ask of You' and 'Wishing you were somehow here again' are also powerful and moving tracks, and are sentimental and appealing .
The acting in this film is brilliant - emotions come across strongly, in particular with regards to the many emotions surrounding the phantom, and incredibly complex character . At times, he's someone to be feared, while at other times, he comes across as someone whose life has made him into what he is, and should be pitied. The film was incredibly enjoyable, and I was very happy with the way the plot unfolded. Both the acting and the music kept me riveted, and I'm not ashamed to say that I shed a few tears at the end of the film, and and moments during it.
The only tiny criticism I have is, because I'm not used to the opera style of singing, there were one or two moments where I really had to concentrate to make out the words . Certainly not enough to make the film difficult viewing, but a small niggle .
I'll definately be watching this again, and plan to order my own copy soon . Although I watched this on DVD, I didn't explore the extras, so can't make any comments on those .
If you like powerful drama and stimulating music, I highly recommend watching this film .
Advantages: Breathtaking and captivating. A cinematic feast Disadvantages: None, but the music will remain in your head for some time afterwards!
...see it again even as the credits roll.
Based on the (somewhat confusing, so I'm told) novel by Gaston Leroux, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical is brought to life once again as you've never seen it before.
Set in the Opéra Populaire in 1870's France, the film focuses on talented young soprano Christine Daaé, the Opéra Populaire's new patron le Vicomte Raoul de Changy and the mysterious Phantom.
Also important is the Prima Donna Carlotta who throws ... ...own way. The Phantom seems intent on ridding the Opéra Populaire of the screeching singer and Carlotta refuses to perform after another of the Phantom's 'hints'.
The Opéra Populaire's new managers, Andre and Firmin, start panicking about who will sing in the show, and up steps a shy, nightingale-voiced Christine from the crowd, whereupon she amazes them with her vocal talent which had been helped along by lessons from the Phantom.
Raoul, a new-comer ...

...as I do Phantom Of the Opera, it's rather hard to see any bad points at all, and when you do you tend to think of them as endearing...
So i'll try to give a balanced opinion. My friend hates musicals. He says they are unrealistic because no one would ever just burst out into song in the middle of their life. Well. If you agree with this opinion then there is little reason for you to continue wiht this reveiw. Go, watch American Idol and laugh at ... ...bother to point out that the setting of THIS musical is an Opera... and where would singing be any more appropriate...??? Oops, so much for that great plan :)
Okay, now to the good stuff. Anyone thinking of buying this DVD isn't likely to be unfamiliar with it so I won't belittle this with a synopsis. You can get that from IMDB.

Something all the family can enjoy as it holds a cast of so many well known names, including Gerard Butler (Tomb raider-cradle of life and 300). Minnie Driver (The riches).
It's always good to see a musical that everyone can enjoy and not just your avid theatre goers.
Music, dance and costumes a delight, as well as a few chuckles and a few tears, this is one toenjoy and keep so that you can watch it over and over again.

DVD Description
Those who thought that smoke machines and cobwebbed candelabras were the stuff of Halloween parties and dance clubs need to think again. In Joel Schumacher's film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway musical THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, these moody set devices--and countless others--make every scene an atmospheric vision of souped-up 19th-century Gothic bliss. Christine Daee (a luminescent Emmy Rossum) is a tortured young star who is haunted by the voice of the phantom (Gerard Butler--who also played the lead in DRACULA 2000), a musician who hides in the shadows to hide a facial disfigurement, yet sings to her obsessively. Dwelling in the dark, damp chambers beneath the Paris opera house, the phantom lords over the cast and management with artistic autocracy--he writes the shows, casts them, and threatens all who disobey his plans with dramatically violent outbursts. But when his young student Christine falls for the rich and dapper Raoul (Patrick Wilson), the phantom descends into madness. Webber's memorable songs are performed with aplomb by Rossum, whose background includes singing with the Metropolitan Opera, and Wilson and Butler provide ample accompaniment. One of the treats of the proceedings is Minnie Driver's deeply exaggerated portrayal of the jealous diva, giving this PHANTOM a very appropriate dose of comic relief.
