Director: Wes Craven Producers: Wes Craven, Shep Gordon, Marianne Maddalena and Stuart M. Besser Writer: Wes Craven. Stars: Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, A.J. Langer, Sean Whalen and Ving Rhames.
Released in 1991 this film is a horror/comedy, (with a lot of emphasis more towards the comedy). Although it has some very comical scenes the film does touches on the lines of child abduction and brutality, (however, there are no real graphic abuse scenes)'
**BRIEF PLOT**
From the slums of a city in the U.S. a young boy called 'Poindexter', (played brilliantly by Brandon Adams), nicknamed 'FOOL', had just learnt that he and his family were about to be evicted from there home for being a late with their rent. With out money or the hope of a job the family are destined to be thrown onto the streets by their evil landlords, the Robesons, (played by Everett McGill as 'dad' and Wendy Robie as 'mum')
However, 'Fools' elder sister Ruby, (played by Kelly Jo Minter) is dating a street wise wanna-be gangster Leroy, (played by Ving Rhames) and Leroy has a plan to save the family from eviction. There are rumours that inside the house belonging to the Robesons is a stash of gold coins, and a mountain of other wealth, all for the taking to whoever can get at it. But, there are many other more sinister rumours regarding the Robesons and their family background.
When Fool joins Leroy and Leroy's partner in crime Spencer, (played by Jeremy Roberts) the three decide to try and enter the house to claim the gold, little realising that once inside they face some real and very strange dangers.
The first clue that there is something not quite right with the house is the fact that the windows are all padlocked from the outside, as if to keep people from getting out, not in….!!!
Not only do they have to avoid the Robeson's, they also have to watch out as there are things living in the cellar and the walls.
There is some unexpected assistance from inside the house in the form of a sweet innocent girl called Alice (played by A.J. Langer) and a mute boy named Roach (played by Sean Whalen)
**IN CONCLUSION**
When I first sat down and watched this film I was expecting a gruesome horror with a few comical twists and turns,… and I wasn't too disappointed.
The brief introduction to the characters at the beginning of the movie wasn't too long and the real action starts pretty quick.
Once inside the house the action really starts, the secrets of the Robeson's upbringing revealing its ugly head and forming what can only be described as a fantastic plot for a movie….and this movie emphasises the fact brilliantly and almost tastefully.
Brandon Adams does a fantastic job as 'Fool', the young lovable character who turns to robbery to help his family. This frightened little boy has to handle every evil thing thrown at him, and what a job he does. His scenes with the Robeson's mad are brilliant but may be upsetting for dog lovers (although no animals were hurt during this filming)
The Robeson's are brilliant characters, coming across as a god loving couple who wouldn't harm a fly. Everett McGill, who plays 'dad' Robeson, acts the part to perfection as the gun toting, sadistic god loving weirdo. The Robeson's really bring the saying 'see no evil.. hear no evil.. Speak no evil' to life as The people under the stairs reveal all.
I really enjoyed this film as it made me laugh and gasp throughout. It was enjoyable with some entertaining and comical comments.
Would I recommend it to others… yes, of course I would. This IS a movie to add to your collection.
