----------------------------------------------- MY EXPERIENCE --------------------------------------------------
Okay, first things first, there is nothing in this movie that is scary. Nothing at all to scare you in the slightest, but still everyone I know that's seen it has jumped a mile a couple of times throughout the film.
The director has filmed it in such a way, that even the most normal of things gets you prepared to jump.
I've heard people compare this film to The Sixth Sense, but this film is so much more enjoyable because the ratings quite low and it's not gory or anything in anyway. It stands on its own this film does and I think it's just a perfect piece of cinematography.
The film is quite religious, not so much that it forces it on you like some films but the family is deeply religious and that's a major part of the film and it's twists.
Like The Sixth Sense, the twist at the end will get you thinking back and going ahhhh I get it now. This was probably one of the only films me and my mum did not work out the ending, I give it praise just for that.
The main thing I love about this film is it's acting, we all know Nicole Kidman's a great actress and can deliver a believing performance, but it's the kids that steal the show. Especially the young boy James Bentley, for such a new actor and for such a young actor he's fantastic, he and Alakina Mann really are amazing in this film.
------------------------ THE PLOT -------------------------- The film starts off with the women screeming, out of nowhere appear three servants, Nicole Kidmann's character Grace invites them in and gets them to look after her two children Anne & Nicholas, who have a strange condition which means they are allergic to light and before they can enter a room, all the curtains have to be closed.
Then Anne starts hearing weird noises, but Grace doesn't believe her and tells her to stop lying and scaring Nicholas.
The rest of the film, will have you jumping with terror in a second, but then you'll carm down and go why the hell did I jump?
-------------------------- MORE INFO ---------------------------- The thing I loved about this film was that I could actually watch it when it came out on Sky Movies which was a good thing. I had never really watched horror before as I was only 12 at the time, it's really good to get you into horror.
I'll never forget the first time we watched it. We had just got Sky and had Sky Movies for free for like three months. It came on and we thought, what the hell have we watched. From about 15 minutes in we fell in love, yes we jumped and stuff but the day we brought the DVD was very funny.
We jumped in all the right places, and we managed to prepare ourselves because we knew they were coming up but the sound quality on the DVD made up jump so much and seriously there's nothing to be scared about.
The first time I took this to a sleepover, everyone loved it and it became a constant film at our sleepovers. We were at someone's house once and I pretended to hide behind the couch because I was scared, then when a particularly scary scene came on I touched my mate on her shoulder, she screamed her head off. It was hilarious.
The great thing about this film is it's a simple plot, you know in most horrors you have the red herring and there's so many of them that it's hard to keep up, but this story stays around 6 people and one house. It's simplistic but effective.
This is probably one of Nicole Kidman's best films and I can watch it over and over again. I recommend it to anyone, but for all those people out there who don't want to watch it because it's scary, there's nothing to be scared about.

Performances
------------
Nicole Kidman is all over this film. Apparently, she didn't want to do it after Moulin Rouge. Perhaps the fact that Tom Cruise is a producer didn't help. Her performance though is wonderful as a prim, grieving, deserted, slightly wasted and totally barmy housewife. They say that good actors can act with ... ...though she is perpetually on the edge of tears and the fear looks quite convincing. Christopher Ecclestone as the husband is excellent in a lost, shell shocked, zombie kind of way. Eric Sykes tops up his pension with a tolerable performance and Keith Allen does a cast-against-type cameo which is too short. The best performance here though is from Alakina Mann who plays the daughter. Horror films with children are made or broken by the casting of ...

...English film, one that upholds the traditional elements of an old-fashioned thriller. Well, that would be until you remembered that the lead actress is an American/Australian, the director, screenwriter and composer is a Spaniard, and that the location is not Jersey but Spain. But, Alejandro Amenabar (probably made most famous by 'vanilla sky', Cameron Crow's horrific remake of the Spanish 'Open Your Eyes') ... ...'Remains of the Day' in this his first English language film. If you are willing to give "The Others" the full 101 minutes running time, then you will definitely not be sitting comfortably by the end of the film. Grace Stewart’s (Nicole Kidman) servants have all mysteriously disappeared, leaving her alone to look after her two young children Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas, (James Bentley) whilst waiting for her husband (Christopher Ecclestone) ...

Advantages: Great acting | Nice and creepy | Brillaint directing Disadvantages: Pace gets broken up | Minor plot holes
Fans of the horror genre haven’t been treated with a multitude of ‘serious’ films. This is partly because a lot of people don’t mind to see some dumb teenagers getting hacked to death by a guy in the mask. Studios like it because not only is it cheap but can also rake in some big box office bucks. However with the Scream franchise ending on a more than mediocre note and the beating the genre got from Scary Movie (and the subsequent own suicide of ... ...and scary films with give the audience some credit. Starting, most notably, in 1999 with The Blair Witch Project a film that raked in big cash on a shoestring budget. In the same year came The Sixth Sense. These two films showed that you can have scares with minimal blood, violence and breasts.
The Others can be likened to the aforementioned movies in style. Yet it also harks back to the old fashioned stories of haunted houses, ghosts and creepy ...

Ah, the post modern deconstruction of irony and sarcasm continues apace. In the absence of originality, Ben has fallen into the trap of using the stalwart “calling a spade a spade” school of writing. DVD Description
THE OTHERS begins with a close-up of a woman screaming. By the time this intense film ends, everyone watching it will be screaming and gasping. Nicole Kidman stars as Grace, a woman raising two children by herself in a creepy mansion. World War II is over, but Grace's husband never returned. Meanwhile, the two children, Anne and Nicholas, must constantly stay in the dark because they are deathly allergic to light. Then one day, three people show up to take over for Grace's disappeared staff, and trouble starts to brew. The odd trio--an aging nanny, an elderly gardener, and a young mute girl--seems to have a slightly different agenda than Grace and the children do. But when Anne starts talking to strange, unseen people, the scares start building to an incredible climax. Alejandro Amenabar's highly stylized English-language debut is one of the finest films in the haunted-house genre. Not only did Amenabar write and direct the film but he composed the eerie music as well. Kidman is outstanding as the overprotective mother trying to save her children, while Fionnula Flanagan excels as the nanny with a deep, dark secret. Because the children must remain in darkness, Grace must lock every door behind her, to make sure that the children don't accidentally enter a brightly lit room; it is a marvelous horror-film device that Amenabar uses to perfection.
