Professional reviews
Review: "...A strong, affecting story..." (New York Times, p.C25, 19/09/1979)
"...The picture's strength is in the superb performances of its leading actors....[Woods] is chillingly effective..." (Variety, 23/05/1979)
Advantages: Very powerful, intelligent and moving Disadvantages: Small negative - the lack of extras.
...as is the soundrack, with tunes from the period and an overall score by Mike Oldfield which is not to be feared here! The Killing Fields won 3 Academy Awards for best supporting actor to Dr Ngor., best cinemaphotography and best editing in 1985. It was directed by Roland Joffe ('The Mission')
The extras on this dvd are scant. Apart from the usual chapter selections, there is only a timeline history of the Khmer Rouge and Cambodia in the 1970s, which is basically text on the screen.
I do not think that a lack of extras detracts from the quality of this as a dvd package because the film stands up by itself. Any price of under 10 pounds is a good but in my opinion. I have seen this in sales in dvd shops on the high street in the past but its availability may now be limited as I purchased this copy a long time ago....

Advantages: fantastic film Disadvantages: harder to find
...There I was, arguing with my dealer what movie to buy. At first, I saw Andy Garcia's name, deciding to take it for my sister. She really likes Garcia. But than again, in all that evening obscurity, with all my pleasure my eyes caught Jagger's name just as well. I couldn't wait to play on the film. I had no idea that Mick Jagger can actually act. Yes I saw him once in the movie about nazi killing gay people in the death camps, during the Second World War. He had not so big role, with Clive Owen playing along the big part among the rest.
Elysian Fields is an elite male escort service, lead by the conveniently called Luther Fox (Mick Jagger). Fancy "sympathy for the devil", anyone? Au yes, you cannot avoid loving him. The Jagger? Well not the "devil", I mean Luther… yes Jagger. Who ever brought Jagger playing this character must...

...one of the best films i have seen for a long time.
gripping from start to finish.
a story of war and freindship the anguish of one mans will to survive.
starring sam waterson and dr haing ngor.
and music by mike oldfield.
very good sound quality too.
set in war torn cambodia.
a beatiful place shattered by revolution.
this is the story of one mans determination to tell the truth.
whatever the cost.
and of another mans will and determination to survive.
but both would never forget what they saw. what they felt.
and what they experianced in THE KILLING FIELDS.
quote: in the water wells the bodies were like soup bones in broth
and you could allways tell the killing grounds because the
grass grew taller and greener were the bodies were buried.
i see in his eyes what must be in mine-a certainty that we are to be executed...
