**The Plot:** The setting is ‘The Multiverse’ – a series of parallel universes. From one, a man has escaped and is hunting down ‘himself’. Sounds odd, and it is. The idea of a multiverse has been covered many times within sci-fi, but to my knowledge never before in quite this way. The idea here is that there is a finite amount of energy per person and it is split between each version of you that exists. One version of one person from one universe has figured this out, and is jumping from one universe to the next killing that universe’s version of himself. Each time he kills he, and all the other versions of him which still exist get stronger and more powerful as the amount of energy has to be split between less and less versions of him. The story begins by letting us know that this is what has been happening and that the multiverse police are after this individual and are tracking him. It also lets us know that there is only one other version of him left. The film takes us through the period of time where one Jet Li (Character name Yulaw) comes to our universe to kill the other Jet Li (Character name Gabe).
**The Acting:** This must have been quite a hard film to act in for Jet Li as he plays both the hero and the villain. I can’t compare him in this to other films he’s done as I’ve not watched any, but I have to say I was impressed. Despite the idea being a little unbelievable, the acting brought a quality to this film which drew me in and had me holding my breath at crucial moments throughout the film.
It is hard to talk much about the Actors other than Jet Li due to the fact that because Jet Li plays the two most important Characters he is often head to head with himself on screen with no one else around. However, he was well supported by Carla Gugino who plays Gabe’s wife in a very believable manner, showing her surprise and anguish at things as they happen, and by the two multiverse police men played by Jason Statham and Delroy Lindo both of whom show how capable they are in these roles even though neither gives an outstanding performance.
The Fights & Special Effects: You’ve probably figured by now that because Jet Li plays the two lead characters and is renowned for his martial arts capabilities there would be at least a few fights in this film. Well it won’t disappoint you! There are Guns, Steal bars, Fists, Feet and Motorbikes involved in the fights in this film, and some of the effects used to create the illusions of speed and agility are incredible. Because both of Jet Li’s characters are supposed to be super strong and super fast, the creators of this film have been careful to show that they are moving very fast at times compared to the other folks around them. They’ve done this by running film at different speeds and overlaying one on the other, and by showing fast falling droplets of fire which then slow down in comparison to Jet Li’s movements. They use clever camera shots to show bullets moving and Jet Li’s head swerving out of the way of them. I don’t want to say too much more because I’d hate to spoil things for anyone, but if you watched the effects on the Matrix with wonderment, then I’d definitely recommend giving this a look too.
**DVD Special features:** We’re learning to expect just a bit more than simply the film when we buy or borrow a DVD. On this occasion we’re offered:
A feature length Director and Crew commentary - This is basically the film being played without sound, and the Director and the Crew talking over the top telling us tidbits about what’s going on, on screen or how something was done etc.
4 Featurettes – Each of these focuses on a different aspect of the making of the film, and the different effects used to create the sound and imagery seen.
Anamatic Comparison: re-Shoot’ - Basically showing how certain things had to be created on screen using CG and comparing the pre-animatics to the full version.
Trailer – Errr Surely you know what a trailer is!… snippets from the film designed to make you watch the film (Incidentally I’ve never seen the point of putting these on the DVD which contains the film, after all, if you’ve got the DVD in your hand, surely you are gonna watch the film!!! Wouldn’t it make more sense to put trailers for other films on instead like they used to with VHS Videos???)
Filmographies – Lists of details about actors/director telling us what other films they have been involved in.
**Overall Opinion of the DVD** As I said at the beginning, I wasn’t expecting much from this film, and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it. There were some duff moments, and it doesn’t rate as one of my favourites, but it was definitely worth watching, and I may well even be tempted to buy it at some point in the future if I see it in a sale somewhere. The extras would make it worthwhile buying the DVD over the Video as they certainly do add interest for me as I enjoy learning how special effects are achieved.
Advantages: Some excellent action sequences... at least it didn't star The Rock Disadvantages: Err... almost everything else
Having recently joined the excellent www.dvdsontap.com, who charge a monthly fee rather than a set charge per rental, I have recently watched some DVD’s that I wouldn’t have forked out £3.50 to see but that sufficiently intrigued me to seem worth renting. Occasionally this approach can lead to discovering some remarkable films that, due to the whim of a studio or the fickle nature of cinema going public, may have slipped quietly from a deserved limelight. ... ...and the indifferent reviews and unblindingly average takings are merely a reflection of a film that fails to live up to its hype or promise.
The One seems to have combined the TV Sliders with Highlander for its laughable premise and has tried to imitate the genre-defining Matrix in several of the action set pieces, the results are decidedly average. Where The Matrix slowly reveals its alternative reality, generating intrigue and suspense, The One ...

...over a hundred movies, with the majority of them being classical Hong Kong cinema titles. In my mind, there are only a handful of modern martial arts movies that can stand-up to the classical ones and a very small percentage of them are from Hollywood. 'The One' really is the film to watch right now.
Starring Jet Li, and Delroy Lindo, with superb direction by James Wong, this film pushes the boundaries in martial arts skills, Special FX, and science fiction all at once.

Introduction
Glenn Tilbrook used to be a pretty big fish in the music business. Thirty years ago he was a member of Squeeze, a band hailed at their peak as "the next Beatles". Originating in Deptford, southeast London, they had a handful of huge hits and a smattering of lesser ones - many of which have become modern classics through inclusion on compilation albums and repeated radio play over the years.
However the band last tasted chart success in the mid 1990s and broke up in 1999 leaving Tilbrook facing the launch of a solo career in middle age.
Unable to afford to tour with a band, he took the decision to do acoustic tours, performing a mixture of old Squeeze favourites and his solo material in small venues, accompanied solely by his own guitar playing.

For some reason I missed this series when it was shown on BBC television and I started to watch some of the second series, but as I like to know what's what and who's who in these shows, I decided to stop watching Series 2 on tv, wait for it to come out on dvd and buy both Series 1 and 2 on dvd.
I have just finished watching Series 1 on dvd and I can highly recommend it. The show is a great drama, it has romance, comedy, drama and everything all rolled into one.
The show is written by Kay Mellor who has written many fantastic drama series, such as Fat Friends and Band of Gold. The cast reads like a who's who of tv stars and includes:
Keith Barron - plays George Williams
Gaynor Faye - plays his daughter Anna
Nicola Stephenson - plays his daughter Sarah
Michelle Holmes - plays his second wife Claudie

DVD Description
THE ONE is based on the futuristic premise that there is more than one universe: there are many parallel universes, each of which contain a slightly different version of every person who has ever lived. Yulaw (Jet Li) is a rogue agent from the Multiverse Bureau of Intelligence who has learned that, by traveling from one parallel universe to another and killing the alternate versions of himself, he gains his counterparts' strength, speed and intelligence. After killing one hundred and 23 parallel versions of himself, Yulaw has gained almost unstoppable power--and there is only one version of himself left, Gabriel Law (Jet Li), a Los Angeles cop. Yulaw travels to the universe that houses his nemesis, followed by a pair of agents intent on stopping him from killing Gabe and either gaining near-godlike powers, or destroying the fabric of all existence. Gabe is confused to find himself being hunted and shot at by himself, but with the help of his wife T.K. (Carla Gugino) and the Multiverse cops (Delroy Lindo and Jason Statham), Gabe engages Yulaw in a series of spectacular fights to become the One. Glen Morgan and James Wong, creators of FINAL DESTINATION and several memorable episodes of THE X-FILES, direct this mind-bending martial-arts extravaganza.
