Director: Richard Donner Producer: Harvey Bernhard Writer: David Seltzer Stars: Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Patrick Troughton, Martin Benson, Leo McKern, Harvey Stephens and Billie Whitelaw.
This horror film, set in Fulham, England, was released in 1976 and soon became a classic, depicting the birth of the Anti-Christ in the form of a small child. The way the story is written comes across as realistic which gives the movie that extra bit of fear factor.
**BRIEF PLOT**
When American diplomats, Robert and Katherine Thorn (played by Gregory Peck and Lee Rimmock) have a baby all is not quite what it seems. As their new son Damien, (played by Harvey Stephens), grows up, strange evil things begin to happen, centred around there innocent looking child. With the sickening suicide of Damien's nanny, Holly, (played by Holly Palance) leaving the creepy looking Mrs. Baylock, (played by Billie Whitelaw) as Damien's new nanny and only friend, (apart from a handful of demonic dogs which appear).
Then photographer Keith Jennings, (played by David Warner) begins to investigate the unearthly events and soon realise the truth. As more people in Damien's life begin to fall foul of the grim reaper Keith and Robert dig deeper into the origins of Damien and the information Keith has unearthed.
The two then begin to uncover the evil truth about Damien……..but what will the cost be..???
**IN CONCLUSION**
With plenty of gruesome deaths and many twist and turns this movie will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The religious symbolism makes this a bit of a controversial movie but is written with much respect regarding Christ. The idea of the possibility of there being an Anti-Christ makes this movie more realistic, planting the seed of utter fear into your mind.
Although there are no really fantastic special effect in the 1976 movie it still does not diminish the fact that this movie is possibly one of the scariest movie I have ever seen.
Why, you may ask…well, if you watch the film and consider that what happens in the movie could easily happen in everyday life. No over the top laser guns zapping a flying saucer, No giant flesh eating creatures with razor sharp teeth, No weird looking monsters with glowing red eyes and a thirst for human blood…. This movie simply tell the story of how the devil can come to earth and blend into his surroundings without causing suspicion… almost…. This movie plays on the religious part in your mind in the hope of scaring you senseless… and for me, it works well.
If you have not seen this film before then I recommend that you give it a try, but don't watch it alone and in the dark.
