Adapted from a literary classic, I am Legend, which I have not read I can only comment on it as a film which I did enjoy. Once again its futuristic sci-fi where the world has gone wrong and only our hero Charlton Heston can save the day. I might add that I enjoyed the irony of "Mr National Rifle Association" running around shooting zombies and philosophising over how the world could have destroyed itself.
Heston is under the impression that he is the last human left alive, the only other creatures left dwelling the planet being mutated human beings, victims of a plague which Heston found a cure for just in time to save himself but not the rest of mankind. That is until one day he sees a woman, Rosalind Cash, in a shop who is clearly not suffering from the plague as she does not look like Casper the ghost. He chases her but eventually he losses her and once again he is alone.
The mutants, rather like something from a Michael Jackson video only come out at night as light hurts their eyes so Heston spends the days looking for food and supplies then races home before the sun goes down. Then in the evening he spends holed up in his secure apartment where he gets sloshed and picks the mutants off from his balcony when they try to break into his house.
Heston finally catches up with the Cash and discovers that a lot of young people have survived the plague but as they get older they begin to turn into mutants just as the womans brother was about to. Heston realises that there is a point to living now, but he must make some more syrum to innoculate the unaffected ones before they turn. He succeeds in making the syrum and saves the boy but time is running out for everyone else and he must act quick.
I wont spoil the ending as the finale is one of the better parts of the film, despite the rather obvious Jesus Christ connotations. The end is bitter sweet and is nice to have an ending that is not always with the hero riding off into the sunset.
I have always enjoyed watching this film and its certainly better than the first adaptation of this book which starred Vincent Price. Although it is a little dated now and the mutants are a little laughable to be honest but some of the empty city scenery is excellent and the finale is as good as you get in most films of this type. A must watch if you like a bit of Sci-fi future world disaster stuff....

Advantages: Minimalistic, intellgent approach, chilling scenario, Charlton Heston at his peak Disadvantages: Not apparently as good as the literary source material (I Am Legend), looks quite dated.
