Each episode is orginal and hilarious. It may be true that a lot of the laughs come from cringeworthy situations, but the characters are all well formed, the plots well thought out and the flow of the whole series is superb. The series contains great performances from all the characters, which you will realise are now appearing in some recent and upcoming blockbuster films (Pirates of the Caribbean, upcoming Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy..) This is testament to the fine ensemble cast which was formed for the short series, although really it is Ricky Gervais who dominates throughout, as he co-wrote and created the series. I don't know how similar it is to the new American series, but either way this is classic british television, which should go down in history alongside titles such as Faulty Towers or Black Books (both for quality of the shows, and quantity of episodes, ie not many). You either love or hate it, but thankfully, I am in the former camp.
