Everything is coming up roses for Professor Sherman Klump (Eddie Murphy). His fiancee, the equally brilliant Denise Gaines (pop music star Janet Jackson), loves him for his...

And the big-eating, trash-talking Klump clan (all played by Murphy) couldn't be happier. The only person who can ruin things now is Sherman's nemesis: his idlike alter ego, the smooth-talking, flashy dressing Buddy Love (also played by Murphy). In an attempt to destroy Buddy once and for all, Sherman manages to locate and extract the DNA strand that represents the last remaining trace of his own private Mr. Hyde. But the gene accidentally mutates with a strand of dog hair, giving birth to a brave new Buddy who sniffs out the Klumps. With the help of Academy Award-winning makeup wizard Rick Baker, Murphy magically disappears into multiple roles for uproarious results. NUTTY PROFESSOR II is a hilarious sequel to the 1996 remake.

Why Did I Rent It?
Up until last week I was working in a video store, so I’ve seen almost everything. This was about the only thing left in the video store last night (Saturday night) that I hadn’t already seen. Oh also, I wanted to see it because Janet Jackson stars, and I’m a big fan of the Jackson family.

Background.
As you probably know, this is the sequel to the hugely-successful “The Nutty Professor” in which Eddie Murphy played “Professor Sherman Klump” a lovably, but very fat professor who invents a formula to make himself slim with hilarious consequences. One very popular scene in the original film was where Prof. Sherman was eating dinner with his family, and the film’s producers have decided to expand that scene into a major storyline in this sequel. The film also stars Janet Jackson (as I already mentioned), is directed by Peter Segal.

The Plot.
Buddy Love - the anti-Sherman created in the first film - is starting to creep back into Sherman’s life, making him say inappropriate things at inappropriate times. Sherman decided to get rid of him once and for all by extracting the Buddy Love genes from himself. The Buddy genes attach themselves onto a piece of dog hair and Buddy genes get a life of their own. Meanwhile Sherman has been working on a formula for “Youth Juice” which Buddy now decided to try to steal. Sherman also realises that the Buddy side of his personality was also his intelligent side. All this along with a subplot about Sherman and love interest Professor Denise Gains (played by Janet Jackson), and well as subplots involving the rest of the Klumps (all of whom are again played by Eddie Murphy – except Ernie Klump Jnr.).

What did I like about it?
The film is very, very funny – that’s if you like crude toilet humour. The scene where Cletus "Papa" Klump takes the love juice is hilarious, as is the one with Grandma Klump and the stripper. This film is a lot funnier than the original film. Murphy is brilliant as the Klumps and Jackson is also superb as the lovable Professor Denise. The soundtrack is quite good, especially the theme song by Janet Jackson “Doesn’t Really Matter”.

What didn’t I like about it?
Due to the general nature of the film, especially one scene involving the giant hamster, this film would seem to be a kid’s film. But because of the crude language and sexual content of the film, it’s unsuitable for children. Because of this, the film might find it hard to find its audience. Also sometimes when the Klumps are talking, they are inaudible and most of the funny parts of the film are what the Klumps are saying – if we know what they were saying all of the time, it would have probably been funnier and also more enjoyable.

Would I Recommend It?
Yes, but to whom, I’m not quite sure!
I’m giving this film as 3/5 rating, but really it deserves a 3.5/5!
