Universal are releasing some real quality Region 1 DVDs of late. Many are badged as ‘Widescreen Collectors Edition’ without any other versions being available. Scream 3 was a good example of this and so is Nutty Professor 2 : The Klumps.
The DVD is produced in beautiful anamorphic widescreen with crystal clear Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound. It is loaded with extras that include a particularly good ‘Spotlight on Location’ taking you behind the scenes. It also has commentaries from the Director, deleted scenes, extended scenes, an interview with Director and Producer, outtakes, a documentary about the make-up techniques used, music videos and lots more.
The film itself stars Eddie Murphy and Janet Jackson. It is a sequel in that it revives the original ‘Professor Klump’ character and the ‘Klump family’ who featured briefly in the first film. There is a new potion on the drawing board, namely a ‘Youth’ formula, and a romance between the two principle characters. The alter ego, Buddy Love, returns with a particularly evil streak this time.
The film itself is mildly funny and entertaining in a ‘Popcorn’ way. What makes it intriguing is the fact that Eddie Murphy plays so many of the characters, both male and female. After that novelty value has passed, the film fails to deliver any real substance and it’ll do for an evening when you can’t be bothered to concentrate for ninety minutes. Despite a well presented DVD, it does not stand up to a second viewing and you’d be better off borrowing it from a friend than buying it.
