Film Only Review of The Notebook
Details:
Directed By: Nick Cassavetes Release Date: 25th June 2004 Rating: 12 (UK) Runtime: 123 minutes Genre: Drama/ Romance Starring: Ryan Gosling Rachel McAdams James Garner Gene Rowlands James Marsden
Plot:
The film begins with an old lady in a residential home, a man about her age who also lives in the same home comes into her to read a story, he does this alot we soon learn, but the old lady doesn't remember. We very quickly realise she has dementia and Duke the man who reads to her does so daily. He begins to tell her a story from the 40s about a young couple, Noah and Allie who meet when Allies rich parents move to the small town where Noah lived during her summer holidays. They are around 17 when they meet, and quickly fall into a passionate relationship. But when summer draws to an end, Allies parents drag her away back "home", and away from the love of her life, Noah.
Noah writes to her everyday for a year, but Allies mother intercepts the letters and she never gets them, assuming he doesn't want anything to do with her after their argument on her departing day, she moves on with her life, as does Noah assuming Allie is ignoring his letters.
Years later, Allie meets a man when she is a nurse in an army hospital, a soldier named Lou Hammond Jr, a rich man who her parents think is perfect for her, the complete opposite of Noah. But they soon get engaged and start planning the wedding. But Allie gets niggly feelings about Noah after seeing him in the newspaper, and goes to see him, just to have closure, but can she really stop herself from falling back in love with someone who she never stopped loving.
My Opinion:
I have heard alot about this film since 2004 when it came out, alot of people telling me how amazing it is, but I never watched it, until last week when my curiosity got the better of me and I got it.
The film is the best and the saddest film I have ever seen in my life! I was actually sobbing at the end, you'd think I knew the people in the film personally! The acting is amazing by all who are in the film! I love the way it goes back in time from present to the 40s. The film is very predictable in some ways whilst the ending is a shock, but you know pretty much all along what is going to happen, but it doesn't matter with The Notebook!
I have never read the book by Nicholas Sparks, but I am certainly going to be buying it and giving it a go, just to see if it lives up to the film, I have no doubt about it though!
This film is definitely for those who like the films The Time Travelers Wife and My Sisters Keeper. An amazing, and extremelly sad film! You'll 100% need tissues!!!!!
Summary: One of the best films I have ever watched!
