The Notebook is easily among the greatest love stories I ever watched! What I totally love the most about this movie is that opposed to some fantastic classic romances, this one actually ends happily. Of course, there are some major alterations from the book- the two of them do not die at the end, Allie seems somewhat more fiery in the movie, as well as some minor plot alterations.
I am usually someone who loves the books more than the movies they make out of it but in this case, I do have to admit that the movie is a tad more well-done than the actual book. In fact, both of them are wonderful- but in their own way.
HERE BE SPOILERS So stop reading now if you haven't watched the movie yet!!!
My very favourite scenes in the movie will always remain the scene before the kiss in the rain, where Allie asks Noah why he never wrote, and Noah replies that he wrote to Allie everyday for a year. The second scene I absolutely adore is their last fight as adults before Allie goes to find Lon. Noah tells Allie that they always fight but they can work it out, if they try hard. I tink that is the most perfect scene ever.
That's what I love best about this movie- the two of them are different in every single way but they do make it work. They make it work so well that years after, even the worse sickness cannot keep them apart. Personally, I think that the whole cast did a marvellous job, Rachel MacAdams and Ryan Gosling were amazing as they portrayed the changes between the teenagers they were and the adults they grow up to be. The chemistry between them is more than obvious and help in adding to the intense link between Allie and Noah.
At first I must admit that i was dissapointed by the actress they chose to play old Allie- firstly she does not really look like her and secondly, she did not even act like Allie! But gradually I started to realize that the actress who plays old Allie played her role fantastically well. She showed how someone changes while growing old, and as the movie evolves, we see how she kept Allie's fiery nature and determination even in old age.
I also adored the actress who played Allie's mother! In the scene where both Allie and her mother are in the car and the mother shows her the man she used to love, the two of them look amazingly alike. It might be the short blond hair but I believe they did a marvellous job in depicting these two actresses as mother-daughter.
I think that New Line Cinema really exceeded expectations with that movie. They remained true to the nature and idea of the movie, and still made some alterations which served to embelish the idea of unconditional love.
Most definitely a movie to watch!
