Having seen this film is Tesco’s several times and wanting to see it I have never actually bought it as hubby keeps saying he doesn’t fancy it. As he was on duty last night so had to stay in work I decided yesterday morning to treat myself and I am so glad I did.
The film starts off in a nursing home for elderly sick people where a man is being introduced to an old lady and he says he has come to read to her. He stars reading from his notebook and soon we find we are being shown the story. The story is about Allie, played by Rachel McAdams, who is a rich girl from a very well to do family. She goes to spend the summer in the country where she meets Noah, played by Ryan Gosling, who is a country lad who works at the timber yard.
Allie and Noah spend the summer together and fall in love but are soon pulled apart by Allies parents who think that Noah is no good for her daughter. Noah writes to Allie every day but she does not get the letters. The
pair finally move on with their lives. Noah gets called up to serve his country and Allie completes college. Allie is soon in love with another man and Noah had finally been able to buy the run down hose he showed Allie several years before and is working on restoring it. Allie is due to be married and Noah is busy working but Noah never forgets his love for Allie and believes that if he completes the house she will come back to him. Allie is due to be married but sees Noah in the papers with a photo of the house behind him.
Will Allie and Noah ever meet or will Allie marry the other man in her life which her family approve of?
I was so in love with this film from the start. Both Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling played their characters extremely well and I totally believed their on screen chemistry. They worked well with the other characters but there was just something which was there between them that made their partnership extra special.
I though that the storyline was wonderful and loved the way it kept going back to the elderly man reading to the lady in the home. Each time I saw the elderly couple I though I could work out who they were and what was going to happen at the end. I will say that I worked out who they were correctly, I mean it wasn’t really rocket science! But I got the ending completely wrong.
Throughout the film I had so many different emotions which I always think makes a great film when it is able to make me feel so much instead of just sitting watching it for the sake of something to do. One minute I would be laughing and the next I would be sad for the couple. This was definitely the case towards the end and I will now openly admit that I was crying like a baby! For some reason the elderly couple managed to make such an impact on me they turned my heart to jelly and had me feeling so sad, the actors really do deserve credit for their small parts throughout this film.
I like the way it was set back in the olden times as I enjoyed seeing the fancy cars which were being driven at the time. I think it may have been the 40’s when it was set but don’t quote me on that! The costumes and settings were extremely good and all fitted in well with the film on a whole.
The DVD which I have does have limited bonus features which include:-
I have not seen any of these as I do not really have an interest in them
This film has been based on a best selling book by Nicholas Sparks but as I have not read this then I cannot make any comparisons. I am definitely going to add the book to my ‘must read list’ as the film was that good so I have high hopes for the book.
The film has been given an overall certificate of 15 but the actual film was given a 12 rating. The rating was raised due to the additional features which were deemed to be higher so the film was raised from 12 to 15. The running time of this film is 118 minutes which I found to be a perfect length for this story as I did not find it dragged at any point and I don’t think they could really have dragged the story out as it would have spoiled it.
I paid the bargain price of £4 for this in Tesco which I feel is great value and I do recommend this to all but if you are a softy like me then have the tissues ready or watch it alone!

Drama - Original Language: English - Classification: 12 years and over - Starring: Shelagh Fraser, Barbara Flynn, Keith Drinkel, Felicity Kendal, Pam Ferris, Colin Douglas
Advantages: Great acting, makes you cry (c'mon it's good to cry), good weepy ending. Disadvantages: Clicheed and unrealistic - You feel like you've seen it all before.
