Nissan Skyline Story
The original 'beast from the east', the Nissan Skyline GT-R is an icon for power, speed ... more
and advanced Japanese automotive technology. With straight-6 engines capable of being tuned to over 1000bhp, 4WD, intelligent torque-splitting differentials, rear wheel steering and enough electronics to keep a space station going, the R-32, R-33 and most recent R-34 models are mechanical 'tours de force'.But what do they go like and what speeds are they really capable of? This programme traces the GT-R's technical development and tuning options, introduces Skyline owners and their special cars, and then puts you in the hot seat for several memorable rides. How about a lap of the old Nurnburg ring with 'ringmeister' Dirk Schoysman at up to 190 mph with drifting at 160 mph? Or a ride on a GP track in the ultimate racing Skyline - the Falken Tyres R34? If that's not scared you, an Autobahn blast in a 600bhp Prospec-NISMO R34 should do the trick! If you thought only ground-hugging 2-seater sportscars with names like Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche could be called 'supercars', think again!
Advantages: Supersonic Cruise Machine Disadvantages: Not many
...Here's a car which works with you, and for you, but never in place of you. There's plenty of communication from the chassis, plenty of poke from the 2.6-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder engine, and electronic gizmos which let you have fun but won't allow things to get out of hand...much.
Nissan claims the Skyline chassis is the most sophisticated in the world. If your yardstick for measuring sophistication is calibrated in electronic aids, there's no argument. All four wheels help to steer and, sometimes, transmit drive. Normally this latter function is done by the rear pair, but within a thousandth of a second of traction loss being computer-detected, the front wheels take up half the task. How cool is that.
Meanwhile the steering is reading your intentions and helping to make them happen. First the rear wheels steer in the opposite...

Advantages: fantastic performance, very reliable, stunning timeless looks, affordable to drive. Disadvantages: britains speed limits and jelly mould cars getting in my way!
...Well approaching 30yrs old and I decided this year was as good a year as any to have midlife crisis and finally get hold of the car I've always wanted. A NissanSkyline. After having owned it for six months I thought I'd share my thoughts with other potential buyers of an R33 which is the most popular and more importantly affordable model with my generation so grab a coffee, sit back and see what you think.
I've researched into these cars for over a year now and fell in love with them since getting my grubby mitts on one in GranTurismo on the playstation1five years ago and seeing how tuneable it was which is pretty much where everyone else in my generation first had a shot in one hehehe!. That was the extent of my knowledge on them and to be honest is pretty much everyone elses admission of knowledge when I talk to them about it...

Advantages: You will confidently know nothing out there can beat you. Disadvantages: You will pass everything except the petrol station.
...I own a 1996 skyline gtr r33 ( said she smugly !) It is without a doubt the most amazing car I am ever likely to own. The engine has recently been rebuilt with fully forged engine internals which allow it to cope with much higher boost ( 600bhp). You can mess about and modify them to your hearts content! As a woman I have found it very adaptable. I can pick up the kids in it or race at santa pod in it! Internally they can look a little boring but again there are plenty of bits to buy to give them a lift. I used to own a BMW M3 and there is no comparison this is a far superior car. The insurance rating is 20 and yeah its so so worth it ! Mine does about 22mpg but I do generally drive it hard. 0-60 in 5 secs 160-170 mph in standard trim. The 1st production car to ever lap the nurberg ring in under 8 mins!...
