Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is based on character sketches and a storyline that Burton produced when he was working for Disney, in the lowly job of animator on The Fox and The Hound.
The characters were various monsters, and the story imagined a world where each holiday has its own town: a snowy, jolly one for Christmas, a dark, scary one for Haloween. The inhabitants of Halloweentown seize control of Christmas, with weird results.
Not surprisingly, Disney rejected the idea, until Burton became famous, that is, when they dusted it off, and made it with state of the art stop motion animation. It looks fantastic, and the range of characters and sets is incredible.
Certain sad cases like Emma Norman in the Radio Times have condemned the film as evil, and not for kids. Ignore them, kids love fun, spooky stuff, and this is just right for them.
