Released in 2005, The New World stars Colin Farrel, Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale and Q'Orianka Kilcher. It tells the true story of how the first English settlement in the Americas came to be; why it started, where it was, and how it developed. In 1607, the English arrive in what is now West Viriginia to build the settlement Jamestown, named after the King of that era. The team encounter various conflicts with the American Natives, and Colin Farrel as John Smith is eventually captured by them. The story continues to show the many problems the settlers faced, and their story up to 1616, whilst at the same time showing the love affair going on between John Smith and Q'Orianka Kilcher as Pocohontas. Having a great interest in this part of history myself, I found the narrative of the film absolutely brilliant as it really gives you a clear idea of what it would have been like for them.
As well as the great narrative, it is also very historically accurate. The soldiers wear the correct uniforms and armor, the settlement is built to the same shape and style as the real one was, and the natives even have what is believed to be the correct face paintings and clothing. The scenery is often beautiful, and when the characters go back to England, they clothing of the people and the buildings are still very close to what it really was like.
However, this may just be due to my interest in history, but I did find the story was centred too much around John Smith and Pocohontas. In the second half of the film, it became much more about their relationship than the settlement of Jamestown. However, it is still definitely worth watching if you are interested in the history of it.
Extra features include a 'making of' in the form of a ten part documentary, showing how they casted, selected locations and all of the other problems they faced.
