a largely brand-new cast, the most important returning actor is Martin Landau as Geppetto. His role is pared down, however, by a neat twist in the tale. Udo Kier is the other returning actor, this time in the new bad guy/girl role of Madame Flambeau, whose carnival sets itself up in Pinocchio's town and offers everyone a miracle elixir to change their lives. Pinocchio (now played as a real boy by Gabriel Thomson) hopes the elixir will make his papa feel better from a nasty cold, but it turns out Flambeau tricked him with puppet-making juice. So now it's Geppetto who's the wooden star of the show! Lots of surprises keep the story happily moving along, with secret identities waiting to spring from the likes of Warwick Davis as the ringleader Dwarf. The Jim Henson Studio puppets are first class as always, with some flawless computer graphics coming to the rescue every so often. There's a beautiful backdrop of Luxembourg countryside too for this pantomime where everyone looks as if they had great fun putting it together. --Paul Tonks

Advantages: Jiminy Cricket, clever animation, lovely score Disadvantages: Lack of good songs, too scary for young children
Pinocchio, the famous story of the adventures of a little wooden boy, was first released to American audiences in 1940. At a point where Europe was already embroiled in the Second World War and the USA?s own entry lay just around the corner, Walt Disney chose for his second film a fantastical adaptation of Carlo Collodi?s puppet morality tale.
The Story
The story of Pinocchio begins, not with the main character with himself, but with the film?s guide and narrator Jiminy Cricket (a cricket, mind bendingly enough!) He takes shelter from the cold in the house of Gepetto, a toymaker who has just finished building a wooden puppet. Just before going to sleep, Gepetto sees that one of the stars in the night sky is a wishing star: and so, as a lonely old man with only his cat and fish for company might do, he wishes that his puppet might ...

Advantages: It'll keep the kids quiet for a couple of hours Disadvantages: It diverges totally from the true story
When his policeman master is killed trying to save a woman from a robber, brave pooch Bobby is also injured. But as soon as he has his strength back, he takes to keeping a vigil on his owner's grave day and night, despite the initial reservations of the sexton and minister. Befriended by a local boy, the loyal dog finds himself bouncing from one adventure to another as the local mill-owner resolves to get rid of them both.
Director John Henderson's version of the well-loved animal tale feels like a near two-hour advert for the Scottish Tourist Board, not that it isn't a beautiful and fascinating country, but a kid's film seems the wrong place to tout it. The Turkish-delight skies and rolling heaths are very pretty, but don't have much to do with the story. Odder still is his decision to shoot the majority of the movie in Stirling ...

the voice of Jiminy Cricket in further Disney productions. However, the man who did the character sounds of Figaro, Cleo and Gideon later went on to do lots of voice parts for plenty of other cartoon characters including Daffy Duck, Pluto, Barney Rubble and Bugs Bunny!
