The Negotiator -
For variety alone, Graeme Revell's score for F. Gary Gray's high-tech action movie about ... more
hostages and bad justice deserves some attention. Revell is, after all, a pioneer of industrial music and has provided soundtracks to movies likeThe Crow; so it comes as no surprise to hear this olio of somber orchestra textures, angry machinery, apocalyptic choruses, and less desirable moments of synthesized rhythm and noise. This is a musical exercise in urban black magic that mixes the exotic with the staid. Without seeing the film, one getsthe sense of an adventure full of ill will, self-doubt, predictable chases, and even a warped touch of romantic mystery as the eerie and fashionable specter of Celtic melody makes a brief cameo.--Joseph Lanza

typically explosive finale, this above-average thriller rises above its formulaic limitations on the strength of powerful performances by Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Both play Chicago police negotiators with hotshot reputations, but when Jackson's character finds himself falsely accused of embezzling funds from a police pension fund, he's so thoroughly framed that he must take extreme measures to prove his innocence. He takes hostages in police headquarters to buy time and plan his strategy, demanding that Spacey be brought in to mediate with him as an army of cops threatens to attack, and a media circus ensues. Both negotiators know how to get into the other man's thoughts, and this intellectual showdown allows both Spacey and Jackson to ignite the screen with a burst of volatile intensity. Director F Gary Gray is disadvantaged by an otherwise predictable screenplay, but he has a knack for building suspense and is generous to a fine supporting cast, including Paul Giamatti as one of Jackson's high-strung hostages, and the late JT Walsh in what would sadly be his final big-screen role. The Negotiator should have trusted its compelling characters a little more, probing their psyches more intensely to give the suspense a deeper dramatic foundation, but it's good enough to give two great actors a chance to strut their stuff. --Jeff ShannonVideo DescriptionDVD Special FeaturesInteractive MenusScene AccessTrailerOn Location: Behind-The-Scenes DocumentaryLanguage in Dolby Digital 5.1: EnglishSubtitles: English/Arabic/English for the hearing impaired

Advantages: Brilliant police action Disadvantages: A tiny bit slow to start
The Negotiator Directed by: F. Gary. Gray (Also the director of ‘A man a part’ and the new version of ‘The Italian Job’. Written by: Kevin Foxx (also the writer of the TV series ‘Queens Supreme’. “A tense and intelligent thriller”
This film contains one of my favourite actors, which I doubt many of you have heard of, ‘David Morse’ plays the part of one of Samuel L Jackson’s police friends.
I have seen this movie quite a few times now. I have enjoyed ... ...very enjoyable film. I think the story line is very clever and it is a film where you need to concentrate as you may miss something important.
I think Samuel L Jackson delivers an excellent performance in this film, as does Kevin Spacey. It is definitely some of the best acting I have ever seen. Lt Danny Roman is one of the top negotiators in Chicago. His best friend has been shot in the head. Danny Roman (‘Pulp fiction’, ‘Rules of Engagement’) ...

Advantages: The way they play Sabian and Roman off of each other, A decent thriller that keeps you interested Disadvantages: None really to speak off although maybe a little bit too long
...£4.99 in a sale, and the fact it had Samuel L Jackson in it, there was really no question about buying it. Made back in 1998 this is one of those films that has passed a lot of people by, which really is a shame. Danny Roman (Samuel L Jackson) is one of the best negotiators in Chicago and is on a fast track through the police force. However when his partner Nate (Paul Guilfoyle) is killed after discovering a plot regarding Police pensions, Roman ... ...that he knew nothing about the pension fraud.
Slowly he starts to work things out and realises that there is someone within Internal Affairs who is trying to throw the scent off of themselves and onto him. Roman then takes matters into his own hands; paying a visit to the head office of internal affairs he takes a number of hostages including the man he suspects, Inspector Terrance Neibaum (J.T. Walsh). As the police become aware of the situation ...

The Negotaitor
Sitting bored last night I came across a film about to start at 9pm, "The Negotiator". As Samuel L Jackson was the main character I decided to give it a go. I then sat, glued to my seat, no the kids handn`t been playing with the prit stick! I found the film very engaging.
Here is the basic plot…not too much detail!
Chicago's top two police negotiators find themselves facing each other. One is accused of corruption and murder ... ...to gain time to find the truth. The other is negotiating for his surrender. An intelligent script and good acting, with Jackson, as Danny Roman, having to convince the guys downstairs that he's a psycho, while convincing the hostages that he's innocent.
Danny Roman (Samuel L Jackson) has been framed for the murder of his partner amid an unfolding police insurance scam. Smelling a rat in Internal Affairs and close to being sent to jail , Roman turns ...

Advantages: Polished, Thrilling, Unpredictable Disadvantages: Long film
This a thrilling story following the events surrounding an ex-cop turned negotiator who finds himself embroiled in an embezzlement scandal within his own department. After inadvertently stumbling onto the nefarious scheme, Danny Roman, brilliantly played by Samuel L. Jackson, is framed and suspended following the murder of a colleague and soon finds himself in a race against time to find the truth.
The plot begins setting the scene with Danny Roman, ... ...and taking all the risks we expect the Hollywood hero to take. We meet his colleagues, his friends and his wife before finally being introduced by a close friend to the evident corruption of his department when he is the last avenue for a man not knowing who to trust. However, not all is transparent and before too much can be revealed a man is found dead and all clues implicate our hero as the murderer. Mistrusted by his friends and colleagues alike, ...

Advantages: Suspenceful, Powerful, Superb Cast Disadvantages: Not the most original film, but who cares?
The Negotiator, the film is set around hostage negotiator Danny Roman (Samuel L Jackson) being framed for the murder of his partner, Nate and the embezzlement of money from the police disability fund. Newly married and unjustly faced with prison, Roman must turn from hostage negotiator to hostage taker in order to expose the real guilty people behind it all. After taking hostages, methodical hostage negotiator Chris Sabien (Kevin Spacey) is the one ... ...instead of being carried out. The clock is ticking and the other police officers are feeling a little trigger happy, so Roman and Sabien lock in a battle of wits in a dazzling series of twists and gambits...
This film is based on a premise that has been done many times before but this one stands out. It might not be no Dog Day Afternoon, but this film is intriguing and entertaining. The direction is good and the two lead roles (Spacey and Jackson) ...

Advantages: Daniel Day-Lewis. Disadvantages: Dumb use of special effects, very bad use of violence.
...that fits perfectly into shape is Daniel Day-Lewis, who excels at giving Bill the Butcher a unique temperament and style. Other than that, Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz act in an over-the-top manner, opting for 21st century one-liners and sarcasm... at least, it comes out that way.
However, there are some great scenes; such as rival firemen arguing over who should extinguish the fire, due to territorial disputes, or even the scene in which Bill the Butcher gives us his own version of "negotiation", using a hatchet and a devilish grin.
The DVD extras are really good:

- Costume design featurette.
- History of the Five Points, documentary.
- U2 music video.
- Discovery Channel Special: Real gangs of New York, documentary.
- Trailer.
- The Making of Gangs of New York featurette.

Advantages: Enjoyable family film, memorable songs Disadvantages: Too good to be true?
...purchase. Returning to the film as an adult I've spent an enjoyable few hours playing with this DVD and learned a great deal about the film I never knew before. The character of Mary Poppins and the plot is based on books written by P.L. Travers, first published in 1924. Walt Disney read them in 1938 but I found it interesting that P.L. Travers opposed the depiction of Mary Poppins as a cartoon character, and it took 20 years of intermittent negotiations before agreement was reached on the film rights.
With the help of the various menus on the DVD it is possible to watch the film with "Pop-up fun facts" (which I found slightly irritating as they obscure a lot of the picture), or with a commentary from the stars of the film looking back on their memories of incidents during the film-making (which I found fascinating). If you've ever...
