Mt hubby has always had a love for the Muppets stretching back from his childhood days and as soon as my boys were old enough he showed them what it was all about. Since then my eldest two have really liked them. After a long hard and busy morning at pre-school my 4 year old came home and decided that he wanted to watch the Muppets in Manhattan DVD.
The film stars all of our favourite characters and stars off with Kermit writing a new show which he is hoping will be a big success. The Muppets take the script to a local agent and he say that he will be able to get it on the stage in Broadway but it will cost $300 each. The Muppets do not have this money and as they are trying to discuss this the police barge into the office and arrest the agent for theft of money.
The Muppets leave the office with heavy hearts but Kermit says that they will find some way of getting the money needed to put on their show. They all end up in a restaurant in Manhattan where they all decided that they have been too reliant of Kermit to help them and agree to leave him alone and try to make their own way in the world.
In the restaurant Kermit befriends the owners daughter and tells her of his plan to get the show well known. The Muppets all depart and go in their own direction but Kermit stays in Manhattan and tells them that he is determined to get their show on Broadway.
Will Kermit succeed with the show and will the Muppets be able to survive on their own. Ultimately will Miss Piggy be able to leave Kermit with his new found friend?
For me the film was good and watch able. The way it has been made is very confusing to me as surely if you lived in Manhattan and a group of strange creatures walked past you then surely you would do a double take if nothing else but to them it was all normal. The story is good and I liked the fact that it is sending out some sort of message to the viewers of not giving up on a dream. I thought that the puppeteers were all excellent and they really managed to make their puppets come alive on the screen.
The real actors worked well with the puppets and none of the dialect between both seemed forced and I actually believed that the people were believing in the puppets and their characters in stead of them looking like they are talking to a puppet.
I have to say that for me Miss Piggy stole the film with the way that she stalked Kermit, she really is one mad pig! I did not like her styling with the poodle perm and I have never seen her in this way before, usually she has long wavy hair. I thought she came across as the jealous lover very well.
The opinion of my 4 year old is that he loves the film and wants to watch it again tomorrow as he thinks the Muppets are very funny. He likes Animal as he is crazy like himself and does funny things. He is able to follow the story and he does like it. Amazingly this is another film which he is able to sit and watch and not get bored with. My 6 year old does like the film but he seems to loose interest in it within the first half hour.
There are loads of songs in the film which are good and help to add to the story. The voices and vocals in the film from the puppet characters are good and they have made each individual puppet have their own personality which I think did add to the story and give it a lot more depth.
The DVD which we have does not have any bonus features. We paid only a few pounds for out DVD several years ago.
The running time of the film is 90 minutes which is a good length as any longer then I feel they would have been dragging the story out and it would have got boring. The film has a Universal certificate which means that it is suitable for all which I definitely agree with.
I do recommend this film but personally I do prefer the Muppet Show and not the Muppets staring in a feature film.
