...great deal of conviction that the Muppet Christmas Carol is my favourite and in my opinion the best version to date.

Now I'm sure that everyone is well aware of Charles Dickens' classic story A Christmas Carol and hedge my bets to suggest that everyone has seen at least one TV or film adaptation of this wonderful novel. I myself have seen a quantity of versions yet I can easily say with a great deal of conviction that the Muppet Christmas Carol is my favourite and in my opinion the best version to date.
Like I said earlier I'm sure you all know the classic story and so I won't spend long explaining it: Scrooge is a mean old miser who despite being rather a rich man refuses to give anything to charity and treats his workers like dirt. Christmas therefore is not a time he cherishes yet this Christmas Eve something strange and wonderful is about to happen to him, as three ghosts appear before him one after the other in an attempt to make him change his ways.
The story is therefore a very simple one and in my opinion one that on first glance could seem quite dull. You couldn't however be farther from the truth if you believed this, as A Christmas Carol is a tale that prospers on merriment, proposes laughter and joy making it a magical Christmas tale. On the other side however the story has some darker connotations and the text is sometimes said to be one that is making a strong statement about the poor and needy. It is therefore possible to argue that using the Muppets to tell such a tale is not the best idea that anyone could have. I strongly believe that the Muppets bring this story to life and that the meaning they give to it is one that we should always cherish.
Scrooge is himself not played by a Muppet character. Michael Caine, who gives a very credible performance, as the miserable old man, instead takes the role. Caine also gives the film a grounding within reality as because he is the lead character and obviously a human rather than a puppet he gives the film a real sense of being and keeps it held in a position between seriousness and fun, which is exactly where I think it needs to stay.
An invisible narrator, Dickens', tells the original story but the film actually transposes this narrator into the action in the form of Gonzo and his sidekick Rizzo the Rat. This comedic pair adds a strong humorous element to the tale but more importantly allow some of the most vital sections of the book to make their way into the film. Another way in which the large descriptive sections of the novel and brought to the forefront of the film is through the use of song. The beginning of the novel spends quite a bit of time discussing the features, looks and character of Ebenezer Scrooge. This of course would not be realistically possible in the film if the narrator where simply to speak the passage but in this version it has all cleverly been brought forward through the use of a very catchy yet also strongly atmospheric opening song.
The use of the Muppet's as main characters such as Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchitt, Tony Tim and Mr Fezziwig certainly add a novelty effect to the film but the characters themselves are very closely modelled on those within the book and so the film does not transcend into the absurd like those who have not seen it may think it would. Furthermore the actually scripting of the film has been exceptionally well done as if you read the book after watching the film you will notice how many of the films speech passages have literally been lifted straight from the book.
Now all of this may make the film seem too serious to be a fantastically magical Christmas movie but again if you believed this you would definitely be hurtling full steam ahead down the wrong track. The Muppet Christmas Carol does stick to the overall feel of the novel very well but the way in which the story has been cleverly told through the use of both human and puppet characters gives the film an overall merry feel that lasts for the duration of the film.
You have to trust me when I say that once you have seen this version you'll never want to go back and see another, as once you've seen Kermit the frog as Bob Cratchitt you can never imagine anyone else playing the role so well.
Advantages: Nice take on the classic tale Disadvantages: 3rd ghost may be a little scary for kiddies
...that are safe from getting the Muppet treatment and they certainly weren't going to let Christmas pass by without their own unique version of a classic tale. The Muppets Christmas Carol takes the basic tale of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" the story of grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge, a man tight with his money, mean spirited and loathsome of the poor. His employee, Bob Cratchett, in this case played by Kermit the frog, is very poor and works to support ... ...played by Statler & Waldorf the 2 old men. The men warn Scrooge that he is to be visited by 3 spirits during the course of the evening, he must change his miserly ways or face eternal doom, the first of the spirits visits taking Scrooge back to his past and reminding him of his childhood and adolescence, of those he loved and lost, of those he treated poorly along the way in his pursuit of money. The second ghost helps Scrooge explore the present ...

...kids Christmas some months before the holiday season has started; but what is really sad is that this adaption is one of the most faithful adaps of Dicken's classic short story (aside from it being the Muppets of course). It also has one of the most memorable musical scores and has humour that suits both adults and the little ones alike. The Muppets Christmas Carol
This has to be my favourite Christmas movie of all time, especially as you can relive your childhood at the same time. If you remember the Muppets like I do then you should really enjoy this, as will your children as I think it gets across the real message of Christmas but in a language the children can understand, especially with the characters.
So on to the story itself, It starts like you would imagine in an empty ... ...seems to go astray as the townsfolk all played by the Muppets burst into song, it really is amazing, especially the puppeteers that manage to get it flawless as usual. Then along comes scrooge, who hates Christmas, so you can imagine the faces of the townsfolk, as the song that they are now singing is all about how bad scrooge is.
After all it is the season to be jolly, and Christmas is the time for love and laughter. As you would probably guess ...

The Muppets Christmas carol is a great family film for christmas.
I first watched this film at the cinema in 1992 (on my own) because I love the muppets and since then I have seen this film I don't know how many times.
Its almost always on over christmas every year but never on when you want to watch it, so I bought it on DVD.

"- UNEMPLOYED!" Instantly the rats are wearing Hawaiian hula skirts and they shout "heat wave!" as if the sun was shining.
The film is pocketed with amusing scenes like this and the whole story is held together by The Great Gonzo, acting as the Narrator, who guides us through the movie with the assistance of his sidekick, Rizo The Rat. The couple help fill in the gaps and keep you entertained through the lulls in the film.
Whatever your thoughts on the Muppets and Michael Caine's singing ability, The MuppetChristmasCarol is a must for your ChristmasDVD collection, alongside The Santa Clause and Miracle On 34th Street. It's not the greatest film of all time, but it's a great one to watch at Christmas time. ...
Advantages: good Christmas Family fun Disadvantages: Fozzy bears jokes
Well it was that time of year again, and as usual if I see a film with the word Christmas on it, I just have to have it.
And 'The MuppetChristmasCarol' was no exception, I remember the film from years gone by, and as I'm trying to change all my Video's to Dvd, this was a perfect excuse.
Of course it the Charles Dickens classic story, of miserly loan shark and landlord, Ebenezer Scrooge.
Scrooges love of money, and his greed, has destroyed his life, losing his one true love, friends and family,
He is so set in his ways, it's going to take drastic action to make him see and understand, that there is so much more to life, than material things, money and possession.
This comes in a stark warning, from the Ghost of his late partner Jacob Marley, warning Scrooge that he will be visited by the Spirits, Christmas Past, Present ...
Advantages: Typical Muppet comedy, great for the kids Disadvantages: Too few many songs!
This is a great family movie based on the Dicken classic 'A ChristmasCarol'. With Michael Caine and the Muppets all in one film, you can't go wrong!
I have this on DVD and I watch it religiously every year - I don;t have any children yet, but hope that they will enjoy this as much as I do!
I don;t suppose it is worth me explaining the age old story of a ChristmasCarol but whereas the original had a slightly foreboding feel to it, this version takes the edge off and makes it fun - children can learn the historic story of A ChristmasCarol and enjoy it at the same time!
There are quite a few songs in this film - some of them great, some of themnot so great. I wouldn't let it deter you though - kids love all the singing and dancing.
The Muppets have got this story off to a tee - I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! ...
