All of the main characters are back in The Mummy Returns. There are lots of things that are similar to the first movie, and I liked that. There are lots of special effects again - though one toward the end of the movie wasn't as good as it could have been. Some may think this movie is over the top and stupid. Maybe it is. But I loved it. It is entertaining to watch. It is not trying to be serious or solve any of the world's problems. It a movie to watch just to enjoy it.
The movie begins like the first one did, with a prologue set in the past. This one told about the Scorpion King and how he made a deal with the god Annubis. He gave his soul to Annubis to be able to fight another battle and win. Annubis let the Scorpion King lead his army in the battle. Once they won, Annubis took his sole.
The movie then jumps forward to around 1930 - I can't remember the exact date now - and Rick and Evie are exploring some ruins in Egypt with their son Alex. While they are exploring, they find a box. Evie opens it despite Rick saying he didn't think he was a good idea. Inside the box is the bracelet of Annubis. Of course, Evie opened the box without reading the curse on the outside of it, so then they have to deal with that. Meanwhile, back at the city of the dead from the first movie - I have no idea how to spell the actual name of the city - a group of people are trying to find Imhotep so they can bring him back to life again. They do find his body and it is taken back to London.
Rick, Evie, and Alex return to their home in London with the bracelet of Annubis. Evie is telling Rick how it is supposed to show the way to an oasis with a pyramid of gold. She is trying to convince him to go look for it. While they are having their conversation, bad guys arrive at their house wanting the bracelet. There is fighting, Evie is taken to the museum, Imhotep is brought back to life, more fighting, Evie rescued, an escape on a doubledecker bus that ends with Alex being kidnapped. Rick, Evie, Jonathan, and the majai guy go off to try to rescue Alex and they end up back in Egypt. There are more chases and fights, leading up to the final showdown with the Scorpion King.
There were many funny moments in this movie like in the first. And many of these moments involved Jonathan again. Some of the funniest scenes involved Jonathan and Alex. There were funny things involving the other characters too. I just really enjoyed the scenes with Jonathan and Alex. There are scenes that have Rick and Evie showing their love for each other. I know some people didn't care for that being in the movie, but I liked it. I liked seeing how their relationship had developed during their marriage.
There are a few things that were inconsistent with similar things in the first movie. For example, in the first movie, when Evie read from the book of the dead and woke Imhotep up, she said only a few words. In The Mummy Returns, when Imhotep is woken up, the man reading from the books reads a lot more. He ends with the same few words that Evie did, but there were a lot more words said. There was one other thing that seems inconsistent with what was done in the first movie, but I'm not saying what because I don't want to say to much about the movie and spoil it for anyone who has not seen it.
I did really enjoy this movie. It is entertaining. There is action and adventure. There are some very funny moments. There is a touch of romance between Rick and Evie. Different things from this movie remind me of things from the Indiana Jones movies. This movie is not trying to be serious or tackle any serious issues. It is just enjoyable to watch. I've already seen this movie twice in the theater and I will be getting on DVD when it comes out.
There isn't a lot of violence in this movie, but it is still not for young children. When I saw it the first time, there were several children in there that were just too young to be seeing this movie.

Advantages: brilliant acting, great special effects, tonnes of special features, cheap Disadvantages: feels as if special effects are prioty over acting, storyline wasn't as good
Advantages: Not too gory. Has a bit of everything - action, adventure, comedy, historical interest and love... Disadvantages: A little disappointing with some of the special effects.
