Advantages: Great adventure Disadvantages: Let down by some bad special effects work

A few years on from the events in The Mummy, Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) are busy raising their 8 year old son Alex when they are thrust into action once more to battle the ancient priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). Imhotep is attempting to ressurect the Scorpion King's army. If he succeeds, he will take over the world, destroying everything in his path.
I found the film immensely enjoyable, even more so than the first film. The acting is more confident from the leads, and the adventure seems to have a bit more money backing it up. The bravado of Rick combines well with the relative cowardice of Evelyn's brother Jonathan, and John Hannah does excellently portraying this character.
If you want a plot with no holes, then you will find it easy to criticise here. There are a few inconsistencies but only for those looking for them or tuned in enough to spot them. Ultimately, the aim of this film is to entertain. It is of a similar ilk to an Indiana Jones film, just adventure and entertainment combining well.
The computer imagery used for the Scorpion King (Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson) towards the end of the film are out of place, and this is pretty much my only criticism of the film. It just doesn't seem very real, and it disappointed me, if I am honest. I thought the special effects and computer graphic work throughout the rest of the film had been excellent up to this character, and I cannot fathom why they allowed this to be so. It did detract from the enjoyment of the film for me, as it took away from the level of reality my imagination was allowing me.
That having been said, this is still a very good film, and one I enjoyed immensely. The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £3.67.

available on CD - you can pick this up for just short of £10 from Play.com. Jerry Goldsmith composed the soundtrack for the first Mummy film, and fans say that the music in The Mummy was some of his best work. The same story is happening here, just with another composer! The music this time was composed by Alan Silvestri after Goldsmith turned the offer down to write music for the new hit film. He has a different approach to Goldsmith, but with 70minutes worth of amazing tracks to keep up with the pace of the fast, action-packed movie Silvestri did incredibly well, and his fans say it's some of his best work along with music for Cast Away and The Mexican.

The DVD of The MummyReturns is a two disc blinder. It's packed full of features, including a DVD-ROM. The below features are all pretty self-explanotory so I won't bore ...
Advantages: Exciting, action-packed Disadvantages: Bit too much for one film, flaws/holes in the plot
I saw this some time ago, but as I had recently seen the third and first of the films, decided it was best to review them in order! Firstly a piece of advice, although I will try my absolute best not to plonk in any big spoilers here (with regard to the first film - this will be hard) I think it is best not to see this review until you've watched the first film. It should make sense, but it's always better to do things in sequence!
I really enjoyed the first film, and so when The MummyReturns came out, I was more than keen to see it.
Story
**First - if you've not seen the first film, read this bit**

Flanked by fabulous computer-generated battle scenes that would make BRAVEHEART proud, THE MUMMY RETURNS is a fast-paced sequel that surpasses the 1999 original, both directed by Stephen Sommers. Virtually the entire cast has come back for another exciting go-round, this time trying to prevent Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) from gaining control of the Bracelet of Anubis and taking on the Scorpion King (the Rock) for control of the world. But to gain that power, Imhotep and his vicious true love, Anck-Su-Namun (Patricia Velasquez), must get to the Oasis of Ahm Shere before Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser), his wife Evie (Rachel Weisz), their son Alex (Freddie Boath), the mysterious Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), and Evie's brother Jonathan (John Hannah, who provides much of the comic relief). Set in 1933, THE MUMMY RETURNS combines elements of the STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES films in letting loose a scintillating thrill-ride of a movie, chock-full of terrific special effects and marvelous locations (Morocco, Jordan, London), erupting in a spirited tale of flight and fantasy, sword and sorcery. The addition of Freddie Boath to the cast increases the suspense as well as the comedy--his scenes with the evil Lock-Nah (fiercely played by OZ veteran Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) are among the best in the film.
