the world about my wonderful mother. I'm a singer today because of my mother's encouragement. She has been the biggest influence in my life' - Daniel O'Donnell. Irish singing star Daniel O'Donnell's mother Julia grew up on a remote island off the North west coast of Ireland. Growing up during a poverty-stricken era in the 1920s her childhood was one of hard labour in tough conditions. In her early teens she was sent off to Scotland to support her parents by picking potatoes in the fields toiling in severe conditions. She was paid a pittance and forced to sleep in cowsheds. Then as a young adult she gutted fish in Scottish ports working outdoors in freezing winter temperatures and scorching summers. After she married Julia's husband Francie was forced to spend most of each year separated from his beloved wife and children while he worked on farms in Scotland leaving his heartbroken family behind in their Kincasslagh County Donegal home. The hardship Francie endured took its toll on his health and a devastated Julia found herself widowed and destitute with five children. She was still in her 40s. In a classic and inspiring story of triumph over adversity Julia tells how she battled through this dark period by knitting sweaters into the early hours of the morning every day to support her family. They were sold in America by relatives and the money was sent back to Ireland by post. Then in an amazing twist of fate this hard-working woman and dedicated mother watched from the wings as her off-spring flourished in life. Her daughter Margaret (Margo) and son Daniel went on to achieve fame and fortune as chart-topping singers. In "The Mother's Story" Julia takes us on a journey from humble beginnings growing up in a humble cottage on Owey Island to a glitzy lifestyle mingling with celebrities and royalty. Poignant warm and laced with great humour Julia's story gives us a fascinating insight into this remarkable Irish family's life.

I watched this film very recently as I am a big fan of Daniel Craig. After watching him in Casino Royal I wanted to watch him in other films before he became the famous 007 agent.
The film starts off when May (Anne Reid) and her husband Toots (Peter Vaughan) travel to London to visit their son Bobby (Steven Mackintosh) and his family and to visit their daughter Paula (Cathryn Bradshaw), a single mum and her son. During their stay Toots has a heart attack and dies. May finds it hard to come to terms with his dead and her becoming a widow that she is too frightened to go back home. Bobby invites her to stay in his house till she pulls herself together, but Bobby's wife is not happy with the arrangement so May moves in with her daughter Paula.
Paula is dating Bobby's best friend, Darren (Daniel Craig) who is also doing some building work on Bobby's house. The only thing is Darren is married and has a son, although we do not see these two characters in the story, Paula mentions to her mother that Darren is only staying with his wife for his son.
Paula asks her mother to find out what Darren thinks of her and if he has any intention to leave his wife for her. May and Darren go out for lunch and get on really well, their friendship soon becomes more physical, with May seducing Darren by asking him to come with her to the guest bedroom (on more than one occasion). May and Darren enjoy each others company both physically and emotionally and over time May finds herself falling for Darren and gets upset and jealous when she sees him with Paula.
This film concentrates on the characters dysfunctional family and the impact each other had on each other throughout their childhood to present day. May is scared of being old and alone, Paula believes her mother never encouraged her when she was younger and therefore blames her mother for everything that has gone wrong in her life. Bobby and his wife are going through a rough time with money being tight and he believes his marriage is failing.
Will Darren leave his wife for Paula? Will Paula find out about Darren's affair with her mother? What will happen to Darren and May - will they run away together? Will Bobby and his wife pull their marriage back together? Will May ever get over her fear about going home?
Overall I thought this film was fantastic I found it to be a very gritty British film. At one point I wondered what has going to happen at the end, and then I reminded myself that this is a British film and British films do not have to end where everyone lives happily ever after.

The Specials DVD of Some Mothers Do ?Ave ?Em contains the three Christmas specials that were aired between the second and third series. This gives you 140 minutes of entertainment. Unfortunately however the DVD contains no speical features, which is a bit of a shame. On top of this none of the episodes come with subtitles, which is always a downer for me.

DVD Description
The sensitive and controversial story of romance across the generation gap. A recently widowed woman May (an astonishing Anne Reid) seduces and develops a close, passionate and complex relationship with her own daughter's lover (an irresistible, bearded Daniel Craig). Powerful, believable performances make this a terrific taboo-breaking love story from the director of NOTTING HILL.
