How does an ordinary-looking saloon develop into a cult car desired by just about anyone ... more
who enjoys speed and performance. That's the question we answer with this in-depth look at the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo series. The Lancer started life as an anonymous...
The MitsubishiLancer Evolution 8 - FQ330.......... If your looking for something pretty special, which really in money terms isnt a lot compared to performance of cars in this category, its good value for money.... For the initial outlay for the car anyway.
The FQ330 option, is named this due to the performance of the car. 330bhp. There was also 2 other options, the FQ300 ( with 300bhp ) and later on the Mitsubish Lancer Evolution 8 MR FQ400 ( 400bhp!)
The FQ330 is extremely quick, the turbo kicks in at approx 3.5k revs. Similar performace car would be a Subaru WRX STi ( which is also actually more expensive than the Evo ) However there seem to be a lot of Subarus, or should I say, 'Scooby Doo's' out on the road these days, so the Evo is an alternative to be that little bit different. You wont see swarms of them on a normal ...
Advantages: standard (high) specification Disadvantages: Boot space
If you are in the market for a reasonably priced saloon car that is loaded with goodies you could do a lot worse than a Lancer. I bought mine new in March 2006 so I am now able to give a longish term view of how the car runs.
A look through the specifications list will leave you dazzled with what the car comes with as standard. Air con, CD, ABS, Alloy wheels etc etc. The list is so good that the manufacturer does not have many options, they are all included in the price!
Running costs have been fantastic with no work needed other than the standard service. The service intervals (12 months or 9000 miles) are disapointing given that most new cars are now at 12000 miles. The service cost at my local main dealer was £180.00 for the first service and the second is now booked and the dealer has confirmed similar costs.
So what are ...
Advantages: Very fast, Looks fantastic. Disadvantages: Petrol - Overall costs to keep it on the road! Rear spoiler - cannot see a thing out of window!
I have a black Evo 8 FQ300 and it is quick!
Looks cool, big enough if you have a family!
Insurance isn't too bad I have mine with a well know supermarket and it is about £1000 a year (was paying £900 for civic type R)
Downside is: needs servicing every 4500 miles and average service costs about £150 major service is about £400. Car prefers to be run on Super unleaded/Optimax or 100ron if you can get hold of it. Can take normal unleaded however I noticed a change of performance witht the unleaded in. I also suffer quite a bit with the battery going flat if it hasn't been run for a couple of days.
Smooth ride, turns heads!
I have also had the car de-cat and the performance is quite a bit better and the sound of the car is 110% better.
If you are going to but one of these make sure you check it out fully. if you are ...
