Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffe's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission". Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti western scores, The Mission shows Morricone at his dramatic best. --Heidi MacDonald

Advantages: Fast pacy spy adventure, with great music and some equally great stunts. Disadvantages: Stunts a bit far fetched - but you expect that with this sort of film.
Mission Impossible (1996)
We just felt in the mood for an older movie, but an excellent film all the same to watch as a family, as pickings are a bit slim at the moment. My children picked it for us to watch as a family.
What's it all about?
Of course the film is based upon the same set up used in the television series of the same name. Having said this, I have not watched any of the original series as this was before my time.
The film is a secret agent movie, with a group of agents given the task of going to Prague to stop a top secret list of agents, passing into the hands of traitors. The group are told to walk away if the mission fails and that their bosses will not admit to knowing them if they are captured.
The mission does go awry and it seems that all of the agents are killed, all except for Ethan Hunt (Tom ...
Advantages: Stunning film and features Disadvantages: Special effects a little over the top
stopping. There is enough action to keep even the most hyperactive person stuck fast in their seat awaiting the next scene. The special effects are impressive but some are slightly over the top eg. a lorry hits a car and the car immediately explodes as though a bomb has gone off inside.
The DVD features are pretty good too featuring behind-the-scenes footage and commentry from the director himself. There is an insight into the way that the stunts were performed.
DVD ROM features include information about the characters although this is very limited, mission locations showing where the film was recorded in the paradise setting of Australia. Plus much more.
This DVD overall is excellent. The film and the features are brilliant. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys action films or a heavy plot. The plot is not as complicated as ...
Advantages: Good action, Tom Cruise is good Disadvantages: Weak story and some poor cast
, from John Woo, very nice but the standard fare
- Alternative title sequence
- Mission Improbable, reasonable funny spoof involving Tom Crooze, a fictional stuntman. Funny enough though not hilarious.
- Lots of DVD-ROM stuff links and computer graphics and fun spy stuff.
All good, especially the explaining of the stunts is my personal favourite, they also look very good in the DVD drive. Subtitles in English with and all in Dolby 5:1 surround and anamorphic widescreen 2:35:1. The film is rated 15, running time approx 118 minutes.
Overall no better than an average rating, knocked up one mark if you get the DVD version with all the extras. The original is better by far, although there are some good action shots there is little to back up the storyline and other members of the cast are uninspiring aside from Cruise. ...

DVD Description
A visually stunning epic, THE MISSION recounts the true story of two men--a man of the sword (Robert De Niro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons)--both Jesuit missionaries who defied the colonial forces of mighty Spain and Portugal to save an Indian tribe from slavery in mid-18th-century South America. Mendoza (De Niro) is a slave trader and colonial imperialist who murdered his own brother (Aidan Quinn) and seeks penance for his sins by becomining a missionary at Father Gabriel's (Irons) mountaintop mission; Gabriel is a devout and idealistic man who extols nonviolence and peaceful interaction with the natives and colonialists. Despite their differences, the two men must unite to save the mission when Spain, Portugal, and the Catholic church begin negotiating their boundaries in the area negotiations that will affect both the freedom of the natives and the well-being of the Jesuit missionaries who have set up safe havens for them. Director Roland Joffe's sweeping masterpiece is a haunting account of the unjust treatment of the Guarani Indians of South America and the men who fought desperately, in very different ways, to save them. The film features a mezmerising musical score by Ennio Morricone that weaves a stunning combination of church choirs and native Indian panpipes into the lush images of the Brazilian rainforest.
