For me Joan Hickson will always be the best 'Miss Marple'. Possibly as she was the first one I saw playing the part. I'm surprised that it took the BBC so long to releace them on DVD
From the acting to the setting to the pacing... everything seems just right. Every part of Joan Hicksons performance (which earned her two BAFTA nominations) was perfect. She plays Miss Marple as the 'rather nosey busy body' who the criminal always seems to dismiss as past it and harmless.
She is seen as the old spinster alway knitting but with her razor sharp brain she can always solve the crimes faster than the inspector. Marple lives in her small village and knows everything that goes on there. Through this she knows the world. She is always saying 's/he reminded me of...'
Unlike Poirot who always had a good relatioship with the Inspector, the relationship between Marple and the inspector in these storys is a little more strained. He thinks she's an interfering old busy body, which she is, but she always solves trhyings in the end.
The colour is perhaps a bit 'washed out' but this is common with the trancefer from 35 mm to DVD. However this does actuay add to the quality of the setting.
However, you may not enjoy these versions if you know the books extremely well, because the plots are changed from the books mainly to make the programmes flow better. The biggest change is in 'the mirror cracked'
Explaining the plots would possibly spoil the series but the episodes are better than the more recent Geraldine McEwan performances. (which for me are far too over acted)
This set contains all 12 of the Miss Marple stories adapted by the BBC (Christie only wrote these 12). Each story is in the origanal episode parts which the origanal TV series was in.
The set is rather expencive especially since there are no special features to add value.

I completely agree that Joan Hickson was the best ever Miss Marple, and although some of the stories differ from the books, as an avid fan of Christie's work, I found this adaptation to be the closest I've seen. As for the new "Marple" version, forget it! I'm waiting for this to decrease in price a little further, I see Amazon now have it at £69.99.
