The truth is that at points it is very slow, and while this is naturally meant to extend the impetus with the horror moments, it serves more to actually drag it out a bit more, and softens the blow if anything.
Brothers Danny and Oxide Pang directed the film, and brought to it a certain sense of 'Jeez, did you see that!!!' with their plot. The Solomons move to a deserted farmhouse with the intention of growing sunflowers as a living. When they arrive there, their daughter soon starts to see and hear and sense ghosts, as does the really young son. These present themselves in a form that is kind of 'blink and you miss it' and you do sometimes get her questioning herself as to whether she saw something or not. Essentially, there is a bit of twisted plot involved here that becoems clear as the story drags it out, but what is heavily suggested from the start is that the previous family came to a grisly end.
The film is around the hour and a half mark, and is about right for what it is. It is enticing and mesmerising in a way, and I did find myself glued to the screen for the majority of the film. The acting was decent enough, with Penelope Ann Miller and Dylan McDermott the parents, and Kristin Stewart the disturbed daughter trying to convince everyone the house is haunted. The remainder of the cast do quite well.
Overall, it's a film that I do recommend watching, as it is a whole lot better than some other horror films I have seen recently. It's currently available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98, which is a fair price for a decent horror film. I caught this on Film4 the other night, so I unfortunately have no ideas on the extras.
Advantages: Good movie that is well done all the way around Disadvantages: Joan looked pretty nuts.
I saw this movie last night. I remember when this first came out in the theaters, there was a television miniseries about Joan of Arc about the same time with LeeLee Sobricki (I may have spelled this wrong). It was pretty good, especially LeeLee, she had done a fantastic job. I heard that “The Messenger” in the theaters was a disappointment. I wasn’t disappointed at all.
I only saw two differences between the two movies. The first was that Milla Jovavich was playing Joan of Arc. The second is that this movie, ‘The Messenger”, is pretty graphic. Naturally I don’t think it totally did justice to Joan of Arc. It tended to make her look a little bit nuts.
But I think it did her justice on a few other facts though. When she was imprisoned, she had been tortured, raped, and forced into wearing men ...
were all Mormons, and this was the religion mostly focused upon. We got to see the religious views of Mormons often throughout the film, and learnt a few historical facts from their views. Other than this, another religious topic raised was when Prior said he was visited by an Angel (The Messenger) who gave Prior a book, and he was made a “Profit”. This again questions his sanity, but it still very religious. Prior, a very un-religious man was picked to be the Profit for this religion, and it makes you ask – why? There are many questionable unanswered facts in religious history and this is another one to add to the list. I think your decision of whether the Angel did come to Prior in his dreams or reality is your view on religion. That’s what’s wonderful about Angels in America – you’ll get to know ...
Advantages: good characters, good plot Disadvantages: -
I felt it was time to get back to watching horror movies again and I stumbled across this film The Messengers. After seeing the trailer it seemed like a typical horror movie plot but however I had heard really good things about this film and decided to persevere. The cast didn?t seem to be too well known but I usually find horror movies never really do have a really famous cast. This film was released in the cinema in April and is released on DVD in August which isn?t too far away.
This film begins with the Solomon family moving from Chicago to a farm house in North Dakota. The family don?t really get on well as the daughter Jess (Kristen Stewart) got into a car accident, suspending her license and causing the little brother Ben to end up in hospital never having spoken since. The amount of money it cost the family meant they had to ...
Twin filmmakers Danny and Oxide Pang's creepy 2003 feature THE EYE earned them enough kudos to make the leap to Hollywood, and their first effort is the creepy chiller THE MESSENGERS. A Chicago-based family comprised of Roy (Dylan McDermott), his wife, Denise (Penelope Ann Miller), their teenage daughter, Jess (Kristen Stewart), and young son, Ben (played by twins Evan and Theodore Turner) try to put the hard times behind them with a move to a picturesque farmhouse in North Dakota. Jess quickly becomes convinced that the house is haunted after some peculiar occurrences while she's alone there with young Ben. But Ben can't articulate what he's seen, and Jess's story is met with scepticism by her parents. It soon becomes apparent that past family tensions are slowly boiling to the surface. Meanwhile, the ghosts keep coming, and the Pang brothers never keep their audience waiting for long before another nerve-jangling scene shudders into view. But as the ghosts torment their new residents, Jess does a little research on the old farmhouse and discovers a few secrets that may just hold the key to why this is all happening. Packed full of CGI effects and a few moments that may cause a jump or two, THE MESSENGERS is a horror movie aimed at a young audience and not horror aficionados, as indicated by its certification.
