The Matrix stars Keanu Reeves as Neo, a normal 9 to 5 worker who secretly does computer hacking on the side. One night, a mysterious woman named Trinity seeks him out and introduces him to Morpheus, considered a terrorist by the government. Morpheus shows Neo a world he couldn't possible imagine, and learns that he may the key to saving it.

If you went back to 1999 and asked people the film they most want to see that year, hardly anyone would've said this film. This, of course, was the year of the first Star Wars prequel and the hype machine was in overdrive, and so The Matrix got relatively overlooked. But it's so much better than the phantom menace it's hard to see what everyone was so excited about back then.

This film came out at the perfect time. The internet was booming, mobile phones were no longer only tools for the wealthy, technology was becoming faster and cheaper than it ever had been before, and along came this film which seemed to tune into this kind of cool, new computer world perfectly.

If you can tell how popular a film is by the parodies it spawns, then this must be one of the most popular films ever. The Matrix defined the action genre for a new generation. The action scenes are unlike anything before or since, incredibly well shot and choreographed, interspersed with thoughtful dance music and big beats.

The story is thoughtful without being pretentious, the acting is top notch and the music fits the film to perfection. There are not enough superlatives in the world to explain how much I love this film. Even for a film with so much technology in it it has aged very well.

This really is Keanu Reeves 'Godfather' role, no-one could play Neo better than he did, he suits his character perfectly. A young, laid back technological genius who oozes coolness. Hard to believe they once had Tom Cruise and Will Smith in line for the role.

I would recommend this film for absolutely anyone, it is the closest I have ever seen a film come to perfection.
