I was excited about this film long before it appeared on cinema screens. I knew it had Keanu Reeves on the roster and frankly despite my reservations about the man as an actor I didn't care. This was science fiction the like of which we had thirsted for as cinema goers and it was here.
The story, when described on paper, seems almost flat and lifeless. A band of renigades struggle for freedom and all that. I will refrain from saying too much incase you still don't know the plot. When you see this movie, however, what could almost be called a stock movie plot transforms into a remarkable show case of action sequences and special effects and, yes, even some sterling performances.
From the sinister Agent Smith of Hugo Weaving to the enigmatic Morpheus of Laurence Fishburne, the attractive and lethal Trinity handled so well by Carrie-Anne Moss and even Keanu Reeve's hapless but eminantly important Neo the cast fit their roles like second skins. Credit has to go to Mali Finn and Shauna Wolifson for their Casting work as even the supporting characters suck you in to make this fantastic world your world, if only for 136 minutes.
Andy and Larry Wachowski wrote and directed The Matrix and like Bound the work is a compelling piece of story telling that never seems to falter from its course. You sympathise with these characters, even the bad guys have a point to be made and you thoroughly enjoy the film for what it is.
What it is is, as I have stated, a stock film with wonderful embelishments. Star Wars was a good old-fashioned science-fiction romp with ground breaking effects, and the same can be said of The Matrix. No, I don't for a moment think mentioning the two in the same scentence is wrong in the least. The Matrix has an added advantage over Star Wars, in addition to Effects it has fight sequences done in the same way as the wire-fighting of classic Martial Arts movies. The lead characters trained extensively in Martial Arts before the cameras rolled and it shows. The choreography of some of the action scenes is as impressive as any ballet. As an added incentive, the whole thing is set to a crackling soundtrack that gets the heart racing and compliments the film.
What do you have on the DVD? What don't you have? From special effects documentries to the entier whatisthematric.com website, complete with scene by scene script/story board/film comparisan the DVD is loaded with extra features and was regarded in the genisis of DVD as one of the "Must Haves" to show off what DVD can do to your friends.
What you have when you turn off the DVD player after watching The Matrix is, hopefully, a raised pulse, a smile on your face and utter satisfaction that you spent your money wisely.

Review of The Matrix (DVD)
Advantages: Good film, plenty of action, some amazing special effects. Disadvantages: No quality extras, some poor special effects, feels like a money grabbing exercise.
Advantages: Eye-popping visuals, much more smoother plot, and one of the best car chases I've ever seen Disadvantages: Some people may think its more recycled than reloaded
