For many years people have tried to fathom out the origins of the world. Philosophers, religious leaders, archaeologists, scientists from all over the globe. The Big Bang theory, dinosaurs, Christianity, beings from another planet. Just why are we here and what are we doing? Questions, questions, questions. With relatively few definate answers. Until now.

For those of you who have clear minds, deep thoughts, and a burning desire to answer the questions, The Matrix is a must see film.

The Matrix attempts to make sense of it all - life, existence, why we are and what it's all about. Keanu Reeves is Anderson, later to be known as Neo. Anderson works for a computer firm by day. In his spare time he is also a rather handy computer hacker. You name it he can probably do it on a computer. His life however starts to take a strange turn when he receives a rather odd message on his computer one evening. This leads him to a strange encounter with a woman called Trinity, also a well known and high profile computer hacker.

This encounter is not entirely by chance. Anderson is wanted by a mysterious man by the name of Morpheus (superbly played by Laurence Fishburne). Morpheus wants Anderson (Neo), as he believes he is the key to releasing us all from the unknown prison of our lives, The Matrix. The problem is however that the Matrix will not allow us to know the reality.

According to Morpheus and his cohorts, the world we live in is not the real world. It is a computer generated civilisation created by the Matrix. Everything we do is surreal, a cleverly constructed computer programme. Our real existence is similar to that of an underworld. Human beings as we know live in a test tube type environment. Morpheus wants to "unplug" Neo from this surreal environment so he can free us all. Obviously Neo thinks this is all a little bit too much to take in at first, and is dubious to say the least. However things are about to change for Neo, and he must come to terms with the fact that he is "the one", the saviour of all mankind. The Matrix knows this, and wants Neo dead. Therefore he must also defeat those sent to kill him, the Sentien programmes, who look just like humans, but who can move in and out of the Matrix at any time. Scary!

Visually this is an absolutely stunning film. The special effects are quite simply put unbelievable. DVD at its very best! We are treated to some of the best effects ever seen in a film. The fight scenes are superbly staged, some in slow motion, a-la John Woo-esque style. As you watch the film this will be something that you immediately appreciate. The plot is something which we are rarely treated to, i.e. it is very, very original. Furthermore, the soundtrack is nothing short of spectacular, pumping its way through the film like a runaway train which has ran out of track.

Keanu Reeves is excellent in this film. Previously I had thought of him to be a little rigid and typecast, how wrong was I. Both he and Laurence Fishburne do for sunglasses and long black leather coats what "Top Gun" did for Aviator sunglasses. Ok, I admit it, I have a long black leather coat and yes, I did start wearing it again after watching this film! The whole film just oozes cool throughout it from start to finish. I have watched it over 15 times now and have never once tired from it. For those of you who are wondering about the why's and wherefores of life you just have to watch this film. Hell, we even get an explanation as to why every now again we experience the feeling of deja-vu (it's a glitch in the Matrix, didn't you know? It's when they change something in the program that we call life!). Haven't you ever wondered why we do certain things, in a certain way, at a certain time? Because the Matrix is programming us to do so. So now you know why. One final question though - if this is the case, where did the scriptwriter get his idea for this film? Did his imagination create it, or was it programmed into him by the Matrix? Now there's something to think about!

Remember, it is all up to you to believe.
