Who are you? What is your name? Where do you live? Where do you work? What's your favourite food?...........Are you sure.
How do you know that your existence isn't just some virtual reality, generated by a powerful computer matrices. Hmmmmm.

This is the concept of 'the Matrix', taken (as few people are aware) from an old Manga style cartoon (the name eludes me). This is hardly surprising, as the writers and directors, 'the Wachowski brothers' are huge Manga cartoon fans.

Straight to the point, 'the Matrix'..........I went to see it on its preview showing......I then returned the following day to see it again, my excuse being that in the famous helicopter scene, the bass bin blew up on the preview showing. I don't think I could really use that as the excuse when I returned a third time in as many days.... I just loved it.
To date there has never been a sci-fi film with even half the conceptual genius of this one and lets face it, the only thing thats likely to come close is 'the Matrix 2' (which has all the expectations of 'phantom menace' (which, lets face it, isnt the best sign! but we'll see).

So, what does this movie really have? I hear you ask.... and I answer, 'it has everything'.. really. it has a plot, which I, as a normally sci-fi sceptic scientist, who notices all of the imperfections in the story lines of films (eg. Alien resurection)... I thought the inventiveness was second to none... it could happen and in fact, if AI needed a power source, I'm pretty sure they'd use us!

It has action. I mean this in two ways. It has your fly a big helicopter over a city with people hanging from a rope ladder,Jumping from sky scraper to sky scraper, fire huge guns and blow stuff up action... and then of course, theres the fight scenes...... if I had words for the fight scene, they'd be here: . But I don't.
I'll just say that it is choreographed by one of the all time martial arts best (who's name also eludes me), who produced some of the best 70's and 80's fight scenes.

What makes the action so good. Well the Wachowski brothers knew exactly what they wanted and Joel Silver, invents a new camera style just for the film, which explained by one of the many extra documentarys included on the DVD called 'what is bullet time?'.

Well I'll end here. But if you are a bloke, like myself, who always loved action films and always fancied yourself as a Kung fu master after 6 or 7 pints (not in the lets start a fight sense, just the 'watch my magnificent spinning kick sense) then I challenge you to watch this film and not feel the urge to try and run up a wall.. don't do it, gravity is much more powerful away from the television set. Enjoy.
